HAMILTON — Colgate scored three goals in the fourth quarter but could not complete a comeback, falling 10-8 to Hobart in its home opener on a cold and snowy Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium.
Michael Minicus recorded four points with two goals and two assists.
Ben Trumble also notched a hat trick, while
Jack Turner logged a pair of goals.
Trumble opened the scoring with the game's first goal with 10:31 remaining in the first to give Colgate a 1-0 lead.
The Statesmen then went on a four-goal run, scoring three-straight to end the first and one more at the beginning of the second to take a 4-1 advantage.
Minicus found the back of the net twice in the second for the Raiders. The junior's first goal came with just under 10 minutes left. He then scored with 15 seconds remaining in the half to cut the lead back to three at 6-3.
In the third, the Statesmen notched three-goals in under a minute, including two man-up goals, to pull ahead 9-3.
With 5:47 remaining, Hobart got called for unnecessary roughness. The Raiders took advantage of the man-up opportunity when Minicus dished to Turner for a shot he ripped into the back of the net. His goal was the first of five-straight for Colgate.
Less than three minutes later, Trumble netted his second goal of the game off an assist from
Rory Connor to make it a 9-5 game.
Turner notched his second of the contest five minutes into the fourth. It was followed by another goal by Trumble.
After the Statesmen put one in, Connor answered back off a feed from
Max Yates, putting the scoreboard at 10-8 with 4:08 left on the clock. Hobart then held on for the 10-8 victory.
Colgate finished with the advantage in shots at 25-18. In goal,
Matt LaCombe stopped eight shots for the Raiders.
