Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Cornell, 16-8

O’Reilly becomes all-time leader in career draw controls with 218

ITHACA, N.Y. – Two goals in every quarter weren't enough for Colgate Women's Lacrosse to overcome a big first half by Cornell, falling to the Big Red 16-8 on Tuesday evening.

Cara O'Reilly recorded three draw controls in the game to become the program's all-time record holder with 218 for her career. One year removed from setting the single-season record with 116 draw controls, O'Reilly passed Haley O'Hanlon '18 for the most in program history.

Seven different Raiders recorded a goal in Tuesday's decision. Kait Henning paced the team with two tallies, whie Kyra Lucey also netted two points behind a goal and an assist.

Lucey gave the Raiders an early 1-0 lead with her third goal of the season and then Henning's first goal put Colgate back in front 2-1 in the first quarter. Cornell followed the back-and-forth start with a 9-1 surge, broken up by Kendall Belanger's first goal in a Raider uniform.

Henning's second goal of the night made it 10-4 at halftime in favor of the Big Red.

Sarah Harding and Devon Maillet scored Colgate goals in the third quarter but Cornell carried over its momentum, tacking on six more to lead 16-6 after three frames. The Raiders found their footing in the fourth, outscoring Cornell 2-0 over the final 15 minutes.

Fourth-quarter goals Lauren Thompson and Ella Bishara brought the game to its final score, 16-8. Helena Morrison made eight saves in net for the Raiders.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Kathy Taylor

"We knew we would have our work cut out for us against a very talented Cornell team. It was exciting to score the first goal, but Cornell's experience and size was too much for us in the end.

"We are embracing a growth mindset and will continue to celebrate the great game moments as we work to be more disciplined and consistent in full game play. It is early and we are excited for our next opportunity to go back to work."
