Raiders Fall on Opening Day of Battle at the Beach

Senior Adrienne Nardone scored the first home run of the 2023 season

CONWAY, S.C. – Colgate Softball dropped a pair of contests on the opening day of the Battle at the Beach tournament. The Raiders fell 6-2 to East Carolina and 11-2 to Coastal Carolina to cap off the day.

Senior Adrienne Nardone hammered the first home run of the 2023 season against the Pirates to open the doubleheader scoring. Sophomores Jillian Herbst and Quinn Livesay and senior Rachel Carney all crossed home plate today to account for Colgate's four runs scored.

GAME 1 | East Carolina 6, Colgate 2

ECU got on the board early, tacking on two runs off senior Bailey Misken to take an early lead in the top of the first.

Nardone answered for Colgate in the bottom of the inning, homering to left center to put the Raiders on the board at 2-1.

The next few innings would be all ECU as the Pirates crossed home plate four more times between the sixth and seventh inning off of pitches from freshman Maya Servedio, including a two-run RBI to lead 6-1.

Junior Kara Fusco doubled to right center in the bottom of the seventh to bring Herbst home with two outs on the board, but it was too late for a Raider comeback as Nardone lined out to left field to end the game with ECU on top 6-2.

GAME 1 | Coastal Carolina 11, Colgate 2

Colgate got on the board first in the nightcap thanks to Fusco, who singled up the middle to bring home Carney. Coast Carolina took an early 2-1 in the bottom of the inning off an earned and unearned run.

The second started in favor of the Raiders as Livesay scored an unearned run to notch the game up at two after Carney and Elizabeth Nitka advanced bases off a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the Chants scored five runs off throws from Alexa Acker and Mia Edwards to take a 7-2 lead.

Coastal tallied four more runs to their total in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 11-2. Jenna Geffert made her season debut on the bump to relieve Edwards, not allowing any more runs and only two hits, but the deficit was too deep for Colgate to overcome.

UP NEXT
