HAMILTON — No. 3/3 Colgate women's hockey defeated No. 11/11 Penn State, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon to complete the weekend sweep of the Nittany Lions. Senior
Kristýna Kaltounková notched her fourth straight contest with a goal while
Elyssa Biederman,
Neena Brick and
Danielle Serdachny stretched their scoring streaks to four games.
A murky start to the game saw both defenses rise to the occasion, limiting the offensive units to zero shots in the first five minutes of play.
Penn State broke through first, tallying the first six shots of the afternoon. Fifth-year Raider Sydney Bard stopped the bleeding with an excellent display of defending on a Nittany Lion breakaway, halting Penn State's best chance of the first period.
Colgate finally logged a shot over halfway through the opening frame that led into the first power play opportunity of the evening, but the visitors killed the early penalty to head into the first break scoreless. Overall, the Raiders were outshot 11-4 through the first 20 minutes but the game remained even with double-digit saves from junior goaltender Hannah Murphy.
Kaltounková scored her fourth goal in two games just four minutes into the second period, but Penn State had a quick answer to earn the equalizer when former Raider Maggie MacEachern buried a wrister from just inside the blue stripe.
Not even two minutes later, the Raiders went back on top with sophomore transfer Sydney Morrow's first goal in a Colgate uniform.
The momentum carried for the remainder of the second, leaking into the final frame after Penn State was sent to the penalty box in the waning moments of the period. Picking up right where they left off, fifth-year Kaitlyn O'Donohoe extended Colgate's lead 32 ticks into the final stanza.
After Penn State fought back to within one score, a battle ensued for the remaining nine minutes, but the Raiders successfully fended off the relentless Nittany Lion attack and escaped with their third win of the season.
