HAMILTON — The Colgate women's soccer team battled Canisius to a 0-0 draw on Sunday at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
The first half saw neither team get on the scoreboard, but both still created some offensive chances.
Ari Bezanson fired two shots in the opening half but could not get either on target. In the 29th minute, Anna Schremp ripped a shot that got blocked by a Golden Griffins' defender.
The Raiders had their first corner kick opportunity in the 30th minute but could not convert.
Grace Poncsak kept Canisius off the scoreboard in the first, making five saves, including a diving stop on an open shot by the Golden Griffins in the 29th minute. The senior finished with five saves.
In the second half, the Raiders continued to create opportunities. Colgate was awarded another corner in the 52nd minute, but the Raiders could not get a foot on it before the Golden Griffins cleared it away.
Colgate earned a penalty kick in the 61st minute after
Ana Schremp got tripped up in the 18-yard box.
Ally Giovino took the penalty kick but could not convert as she placed it just over the crossbar.
The Raiders continued to attack as time dwindled. Colgate had three corner kicks in four minutes, starting in the 84th minute. The Raiders' only shot attempt from the three came on the second corner when Bezanson hit one that got saved by the Canisius goalkeeper.
With just seconds remaining on the clock, the Golden Griffins had a breakaway chance, but
Lauren Rougas made a clutch tackle just outside the box to prevent them from getting a shot off.
Colgate recorded six shots in the game, including one on goal.
