HAMILTON – Colgate dominated both sides of the net with an impressive 3-0 sweep of Army on Friday night at Cotterell Court. The win extends the Raiders' win streak to 10 matches.
Colgate has now knocked off back-to-back league unbeaten teams in Bucknell and Army, this time in decisive fashion as the last standing undefeated Patriot League team. The Raiders were on point from the service line with seven aces, led by two apiece from Julia Kurowski and Abby Shadwick.
Defensively, the Raiders held Army to a .140 hitting percentage thanks to 10 blocks overall, including three from Sophie Thompson. Kurowski, Shadwick, and Harper Snyder each recorded two blocks on the night. Carlie Rzeszotarski for the second straight match paced Colgate in kills (10) and finished with a team-best .391 hitting percentage. Sydney Jones (16) and Kurowski (13) combined for 29 of the team's 33 assists.
Set 1: Colgate 25, Army 17
The seesaw first set featured back-and-forth points before Colgate broke away from a 12-12 tie with a 5-0 scoring spurt. Kills from Shadwick, Kurowski, and Thompson sparked the run. Athena Leota and Rzeszotarski added kills down the stretch to help the Raiders pull away for a 25-17 opening triumph.
Set 2: Colgate 25, Army 20
Colgate blitzed out to a 12-4 lead in the second set after a service ace from Shadwick. Army chipped away, however, and climbed all the way back to tie the set at 18-all with a 5-2 run capped off by a kill from Paige Fixemer. The Raiders immediately countered with five of the next six, and put the set away with a clinching block by Thompson and Kurowski.
Set 3: Colgate 25, Army 14
The Raiders left no doubt with a convincing third and final set. Colgate had the Black Knights doubled up 12-6 and maintained the same margin after Kurowski's kill made it 18-12. Army never threatened down the stretch and back-to-back kills from Thompson finished off the sweep.
