Colgate Athletics welcomes newest members during Homecoming Weekend

Since its creation in 1979, more than 250 men and women have been recognized for their achievements as Colgate student-athletes in the Hall of Honor.

At Homecoming Weekend 2022, Colgate welcomed 14 new members to this prestigious group in a special ceremony at the Palace Theater in Hamilton that sparked joy and pleasant memories for inductees, and their friends, and families in the packed audience.

Every two years, individuals are inducted to the Hall of Honor for their outstanding contributions to Colgate Athletics. This year's lineup featured eight men and six women who have piled up a combined 31 conference championships across 21 sports while at Colgate.

In total, 262 individuals have their names inscribed in the walls of the Hall of Honor.

"The accomplishments of these men and women in every field and every arena have really helped to shape Colgate Athletics into what it is today," said Colgate's Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Nicki Moore during her opening remarks at the event.

This year's inductees include Jackie Adlam '09, a volleyball standout who graduated as the program's and Patriot League's all-time leader in digs with 1,989. She also helped guide the Raiders to three conference championship matches.

When Adlam took the stage to accept her induction, she reflected on her days at Colgate. As a bright-eyed teen from California, she left her comfort zone to travel across the country and begin her college experience.

After two weeks of training with the volleyball team, her teammates became her new family, while Cotterell Court was a second home. She learned to cherish every moment with her team — from training sessions at 6 a.m. to long Saturday night bus rides back to Hamilton after road games.

She thanked her family for traveling thousands of miles to watch most of her games, and she expressed gratitude for her memories as a Raider and the lessons Colgate taught her.

"It's not just about how good or great we are at one thing," she said. "It's about how good we are at juggling multiple things. How many balls could we keep in the air simultaneously, fulfilling our family duties and professional commitments. This is really the key, and I learned this specific skill at Colgate."

Peter Baum '13 became Colgate's first Tewaarton Award winner in 2012. The award is presented annually to the best player in college lacrosse. He graduated as Colgate's all-time leader in career goals and points and held single-season records in both categories.

After leaving Hamilton, he was drafted No. 1 overall in the Major League Lacrosse draft and went on to play for the Ohio Machine.

Baum thanked his teammates and former coaches for helping him become a successful lacrosse player. He also thanked the nine teammates who became his best friends and made his Colgate experience even more memorable.

"I'm so incredibly grateful for all my teammates," said Baum, a Portland, Ore. native whose parents, cousin, and aunt are also Colgate graduates.

"But mostly, I'm so incredibly grateful for the nine brothers who I graduated with in 2013. I certainly wouldn't be the person who I am or reach this place in life without the sport of lacrosse. That's because it led me to Colgate and to my nine best friends."

When Reed Hagmann '05 was called to the stage to be inducted, he used the opportunity to reflect on what had been a week unlike any other in his life.

The week began with the birth of his first child. Days later, he learned that his father was cancer free. He was originally going to skip Homecoming Weekend, but his wife wouldn't let him miss the event and bought him a plane ticket.

"This has been the best week of my life," said an elated Hagmann, who became Colgate's first men's tennis player to receive a National ITA ranking. He also graduated as the University's all-time singles wins leader with 89.

"To say it's been an emotional week is an understatement," he said. "I'm honored to be here and humbled to be here."
