Colgate Announces Hall of Honor Class of 2022

Raiders Welcome 14 Inductees; Ceremony Set for Homecoming Weekend

HAMILTON – Colgate Athletics is excited to welcome 14 new members to the 2022 Hall of Honor.

This year’s lineup of inductees features eight men and six women who have together accumulated 31 conference championships across 21 sports during their Colgate careers. This year’s group brings the Hall of Honor membership to 262 honorees. 

After a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hall of Honor ceremony returns in person this fall on Saturday, Sept. 24, as part of Homecoming Weekend. Full details, including ticket and registration information, can be found HERE.

Hall of Honor inductions take place every two years to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Colgate Athletics. The Hall of Honor's purpose is to perpetuate the memory of those who have brought distinction, honor, and excellence to Colgate Athletics.

“It is an honor and a delight to welcome this distinguished class of inductees to the Hall of Honor this fall,” Colgate’s Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Nicki Moore commented. “Each inductee has made a remarkable impact on their sport, athletics at Colgate, and our university. These former student-athletes, coaches, and administrators represent excellence in every field and every arena, and I look forward to celebrating them during Homecoming weekend.”

The following inductees are listed below in alphabetical order.

Jackie Adlam ’09

Volleyball

Jackie Adlam was a two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and became the first Colgate player to earn back-to-back major awards. An anchor on Colgate’s defense in each of her four seasons, she graduated as the program’s and Patriot League’s all-time leader in digs with 1,989. A four-time All-Patriot League selection as a libero, Adlam held the top three single-season digs performances in Colgate history and secured four top 10 single-season Patriot League records. She also helped guide Colgate to three conference championship matches and earned All-Tournament honors in 2007. She was named the team’s most valuable defensive player for four consecutive years. As one of the conference’s premier all-time players, Adlam is a member of the Patriot League’s 25th Anniversary and Silver Anniversary Teams.

Peter Baum ’13

Men’s Lacrosse

As one of the top lacrosse players in Patriot League history, Peter Baum became Colgate’s first Tewaaraton Award winner in 2012, the national award presented annually to the best player in college lacrosse. He garnered All-America First Team and Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honors after leading the Raiders to a league regular season championship in 2012. A three-time All-America selection and four-year All-Patriot League First Team honoree, Baum graduated as Colgate’s all-time leader in career goals and points and held single-season records in both categories. His 164 career goals rank No. 1 in the Patriot League. A two-time Academic All-League selection, Baum earned USILA Scholar All-America honors before being drafted first overall in the Major League Lacrosse draft in 2013 by the Ohio Machine.

Bob Benson

Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving

Bob Benson began his Colgate swimming and diving coaching career in 1970 as the men’s coach. Ten years later he took the helm as the women’s coach, and he led both programs as head coach through 2000. Benson finished his 31-year Colgate career with a 300-220 record, compiling 186 wins for the men and 114 for the women – both school records. He turned the program into a perennial conference contender, highlighted by 13 consecutive-win seasons including back-to-back 11-win campaigns in 1973-74 and 1974-75. In 20 seasons as the women’s head coach, Benson produced 12 winning seasons and won New York State AIAW crowns in 1981, 1982, and 1985. Before joining the Patriot League, Benson guided 11 Colgate teams to Upper New York State Swimming and Diving Association championships during the 1970s and 1980s. A standout collegiate swimmer at UConn, Benson won the New England Region championships in the 220- and 440-yard freestyle events as team captain. He also competed in the NCAA championships and participated in the 1960 Olympic Trials.

Malissa Burke ’04

Women’s Basketball

Helping lead Colgate to its first 20-win season and Patriot League championship, Malissa Burke concluded her Colgate career ranked third all-time in points scored (1,445), eighth in scoring average (12.4), sixth in 3-pointers made (142), and eighth in assists (282). She ranked in the top 15 in eight different categories at the time of graduation. A four-year starting guard for the Raiders, Burke was a two-time All-Patriot League Second Team selection and was named the Patriot League Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2004 after scoring 23 points in the conference championship to help lead the Raiders to their first NCAA tournament berth.

Elise DeRoo ’12
Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field

Elise DeRoo, a five-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, won five individual Patriot League championships – two indoor, one outdoor, and two cross country – on her way to being named to the Patriot League 25th All-Anniversary Team. DeRoo captured the women’s individual cross country championships in 2009 and 2010 before taking third at the 2011 event. She was also a force in both the indoor and outdoor seasons of track and field, taking gold in the 3,000-, 5,000-, and 10,000-meter runs en route to earning All-League First Team laurels. DeRoo, who earned the school’s Mitchell Memorial Award as the graduating student-athlete with the highest GPA, was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. DeRoo, twice named the Outdoor Outstanding Performer and Cross Country Outstanding Runner of the Meet, qualified for the 2010 NCAA cross country championships and finished her Raider career as the program record holder in the 3,000-meter run, one-mile run, and distance medley relay.

Nicole D’Orazio ’98

Women’s Soccer

Nicole D’Orazio was a standout for one of the greatest women’s soccer runs in Patriot League history. A centerpiece of four consecutive conference championship teams, D’Orazio graduated as Colgate’s all-time leader in career points (127) and assists (37), and her 45 goals ranked second. D’Orazio garnered NSCAA All-Region honors twice during her collegiate career and she was a three-time All-Patriot League selection. She led the team in scoring in 1995 and 1997, the latter of which helped the Raiders to a perfect 6-0 record in Patriot League play. Her 127 career points ranked fifth all-time in Patriot League history. D’Orazio was selected to the Patriot League All-Decade Team (1990-99) and is a member of the 25th All-Anniversary Team.

Reed Hagmann ’05

Men’s Tennis

Reed Hagmann, the first Colgate men’s tennis player to receive a National ITA ranking, graduated as the University’s all-time singles wins leader (89) and a two-time Patriot League singles champion in 2001 and 2002. A four-time All-Patriot League First Team selection, Hagmann earned a pair of conference major awards with Rookie of the Year in 2002 and Player of the Year in 2005. He played in every match at No. 1 singles and doubles, posting a 46-24 overall record. He capped off his brilliant career by going undefeated, 6-0 in singles and 5-1 in doubles during Patriot League play. Hagmann was a key contributor to Colgate’s 2002 team that reached the Patriot League championship, helping the Raiders share the regular season title in 2004. Hagmann, a two-time singles conference champion, is a member of the Patriot League’s 25th All-Anniversary Team.

Braden Houston

Golf, Hockey, Athletics

Braden Houston devoted more than 30 years to the Colgate athletics department, serving as the head coach for men’s hockey (1972-1975), women’s hockey (1995-1999), and men’s golf (1978-2005). He also served in various administrative roles, including the positions of athletics business manager, assistant athletics director, associate athletics director, and acting director of athletics. Houston served 26 years as the Chair of the Colgate Athletics Hall of Honor. A two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year in 1990 and 1991, Houston’s overall men’s golf record finished at 209-38-1, which included a 29-duel win streak from 1977-1978.

Elena Isaac ’04

Softball

A three-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree, Elena Isaac helped guide Colgate to its second Patriot League championship in 2003. She was named the Patriot League Tournament Most Valuable Player after posting a perfect 0.00 ERA in the postseason. One of the most decorated pitchers in program history, Isaac graduated as Colgate’s career leader in several categories, including wins (59), earned run average (1.67), and shutouts (21). Her 291 career strikeouts were the second most in program history. She garnered Mid-Atlantic Second Team and Patriot League Pitcher of the Year honors as a senior in 2004 after helping the Raiders to a 34-17 overall record. She was a recipient of the program’s Raider Award after the 2003 championship season.

Chris Johnson ’13

Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field

Chris Johnson claimed five individual Patriot League championships – two in cross country (2011 and 2012), two in outdoor track and field (2012), and one for indoor (2013). He won his first title in cross country with a time of 24.53.9 at Lehigh and followed that up a year later with 25.11.0 at Colgate’s Harry Lang Course. His conference championships on the track came in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. A five-time All-Patriot League honoree, Johnson holds two freshman indoor program records in the 3,000 meters (8:37.45) and 5,000 meters (14:52.59). Competing on the national stage, he won the IC4A championship in 2012. Johnson earned Patriot League and USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors. His accomplishments earned him a spot on the Patriot League 25th Anniversary Team as one of the conference’s top student-athletes.

Gavin McCarney ’14

Gavin McCarney finished his career as one of the greatest quarterbacks in Colgate football history. McCarney holds several single-game and season career records within the program, including most yards gained in a game (512) and in a season (3,778). McCarney concluded his prolific career ranked fifth in career passing and third in career offense. As a junior in 2012, he was named Second Team All-American by The Sports Network and Third Team All-American by the Associated Press after leading the Raiders to the first round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs. McCarney also earned Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, First Team All Patriot-League, and was named to the First-Team ECAC Division I-AA/FCS All-Stars. During his career, McCarney recorded 12 100-yard rush games and 15 200-yard passing games. He was a three-time recipient of the program’s Andy Kerr Trophy, given to Colgate’s most valuable offensive player.

Katie McVeigh ’06

Women’s Lacrosse

Katie McVeigh made her mark in the Colgate women’s lacrosse record book, finishing second all-time in both career goals (200) and points (258) as well as seventh in assists (58). As a freshman in 2003, she was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year. In 2005, she earned Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and IWLCA All-North Region Second Team accolades, while helping the Raiders to their second straight Patriot League championship. A catalyst to one of the most successful conference stretches in program history, McVeigh was a four-time All-Patriot League selection, collecting Second Team honors as a freshman and First Team accolades each of the following three seasons. McVeigh’s achievements helped her earn a spot on the Patriot League 25th All-Anniversary Team.

Tyrone Russell ’03

Men’s Track and Field

A highly decorated track and field athlete for the Raiders, Tyrone Russell was a four-time Patriot League Outdoor Champion, taking first place in both the 200 and 400 meters in 2001 and earning gold in the 4x100 meter relay and 200 meters in 2003. He was a four-time First Team Outdoor All-Patriot League selection and was named Patriot League Top Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet in 2003. Russell earned the team’s Outdoor Outstanding Freshman Performer Award in 2000 and was also a four-time recipient of the program’s Outdoor Excellence for Achieving Award. Additionally, he was a two-time recipient of the Walter and Dorothy Fullam Award for significant team contribution. Russell’s performances garnered him a spot on the Patriot League 25th All-Anniversary Team. During his indoor track career, Russell claimed two-straight Patriot League Championships, earning gold in both the 200 and 400 meters in 2003, after winning the 4x400 meter relay title in 2002. Both of those years he was named Patriot League Top Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet. Russell was a three-time First Team Indoor All-Patriot League selection and currently holds Colgate's indoor record in the 200 meters.

Seth Schaeffer ’98

Men’s Basketball

One of Colgate’s greatest shooters from beyond the arc, Seth Schaeffer finished his decorated career ranked first all-time in 3-point field goals made (266), first in 3-point field goals attempted (711), and ninth in career points (1,291). He earned Second Team All-Patriot League and the program’s Jack Bruen Most Improved Award in 1996. During the 1997-98 season, he led the Raiders in points with 492 (17.6 PPG), on his way to being named First Team All-Patriot League and NABC Second-Team All-District. He also earned team MVP and the Jack Mitchell Award, given to the senior player who combines the best of the athletic and academic worlds. Outside of the classroom, he was a member of Colgate’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from 1996-98 and served as the president during his final year. Schaeffer was also a student representative on the NCAA Certification steering committee in 1998.
