Colgate, Binghamton Split Softball Doubleheader

Edwards Sets Single-Game Record with 16 Strikeouts

HAMILTON, N.Y. – First-year Mia Edwards made history and Colgate salvaged a non-conference doubleheader split with Binghamton on Tuesday at the Eaton Street Softball Complex. The Raiders bounced back from a 2-0 loss to beat the Bearcats 8-0 in Game 2.

Edwards etched her name in the record book with 16 strikeouts in Game 1, the most in a single–game in program history. The previous single-game strikeout record was 14, set by Gen Kaminski against Le Moyne in 1984. Edwards struck out the side in the sixth to tie the mark and then added two more in the top of the seventh to stand alone in the record book.

Kaitlyn Borruso picked up where Edwards left off with 3 2/3 scoreless innings in Game 2. The two starting pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings.

Game 1 | Binghamton 2, Colgate 0

Edwards registered six strikeouts through the first three innings. After working around two baserunners in the top of the first, she fired back-to-back 1-2-3 innings and had eight strikeouts through four innings.

Steph Jacoby stayed consistent at the plate with a base hit to right field in the home half of the first. Unfortunately that would be Colgate's last baserunner until Meaghan Houk belted a one-out single up the middle in the fifth inning.

Binghamton's Alli Richmond's homer to straightaway center in the top of the fourth was the only blemish on either pitcher through four innings. The Bearcats doubled their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth when Alayna Harbaugh drove a two-out RBI single up the middle.

Adrienne Nardone reached on a base hit in the last half of the seventh but the Raiders couldn't bring her home and ultimately dropped the opener 2-0.

Edwards was spectacular, striking out 16 batters and allowing two runs on seven hits over seven innings. She had at least two strikeouts in six of the seven frames.

Binghamton's Chelsea Howard earned the win in the circle, striking out four and holding the Raiders to three hits in the shutout.

Game 2 | Colgate 8, Binghamton 0 (5)

Jillian Herbst, fresh off Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors, sparked the Raiders with a triple to lead off the nightcap. She scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Jacoby and Colgate jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in Game 2.

The Raiders threatened again in the bottom of the third with one out and runners on second and third but they couldn't cash in after a double play ended the inning.

Colgate outhit Binghamton 9-3 and the hard work at the plate paid dividends in the fourth. The Raiders put up seven runs on the strength of five hits – including two mammoth home runs.

Elizabeth Nitka's first collegiate homer, a three-run blast to right center, stretched the lead to 4-0. Quinn Livesay started it back up with a double, Rachel Carney worked a walk, and then Herbst beat an infield single to load the bases for Jacoby. Colgate's hottest hitter was up to the task, smashing an opposite-field grand slam over the wall in right center to blow the game open 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Bailey Misken nabbed a strikeout and a pair of groundouts in a 1-2-3 top of the fifth to secure the five-inning Game 2 victory. Borruso improved to 7-1 on the season after scattering two hits with three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Marissa Lamison-Myers

"I'm really proud of Mia Edwards. She did a great job of keeping the ball moving. It's been a while since she's been in the circle, so for her to come out and really do her job with 16 strikeouts, was extremely impressive. It was up to the rest of the group and we fell a little bit short but it was great to see us bounce back.

"The second game started with Kaitlyn Borruso. She set the tone for us. It was nice to see us get that first run early and then really hammer it in the bottom of the fourth. We shook up the lineup and maybe it provided a bit of a spark. Elizabeth Nitka got into one for her first collegiate homer, Kara Fusco was battling, and Steph Jacoby has been hitting well. Top to bottom I was really happy with how we bounced back and swung the bats in Game 2."
