HAMILTON, N.Y. – Facing it's second consecutive ranked opponent in three days Colgate was unable to keep up with upstate rival Cornell in a 16-9 loss at Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium.
Colgate took a 1-0 lead in the contest on
Brian Minicus' 23
rd goal of the season a mere 1:37 into the game on a wrap-around from the right side. 1:02 later Cornell scored the first of four straight goals, before
Michael Minicus took an assist from Brian with 3:06 remaining to cap the first period scoring at 4-2 Cornell.
Marshall Terres opened the second period scoring off an assist from
Jacob Sposita to bring the Raiders to within 4-3 at the 12:47 mark, but Cornell's second four goal string of the first half gave the Big Red an 8-3 lead. An unassisted
Colin Ruppenstein marker with 1:32 left in the half made the score 8-4 at the break.
The teams swapped goals to begin the third period with Cornell scoring at the 12:37 mark and
Ben Trumble finding twine off a
Brian Minicus assist 55 seconds later. The third four goal run of the game by Cornell drove the lead to 13-5 before
Brendan Jordan scored on
Brian Minicus' third assist of the afternoon with 2:31 left in the quarter and
Michael Minicus nailed an unassisted goal 35 seconds later to make the score 13-7 entering the final stanza.
Two Big Red goals to open the fourth quarter were followed by an unassisted tally by Terres and
Brian Minicus' second goal of the game off an assist from Ruppenstein. Minicus has scored multiple goals in each of Colgate's eight games. Cornell finished the scoring with the final goal of the game for the 16-9 victory.
Colgate had the advantage at the faceoff dot with
Thomas Colucci winning eight of 16 attempts and racking up seven ground balls.
Brian Wilmans was six of nine on faceoffs.
Michael Lia had a caused turnover and three ground balls, while
Ryan Decker also scooped up three ground balls.
Will Rosenblatt had four ground ball pick-ups.
Matt LaCombe made 13 saves in the Raider cage.
