BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite holding an early lead in both games, Colgate (8-12) dropped both games of a double header to Samford (13-12) on Thursday afternoon at the SU Softball Field.
On the afternoon Jillian Herbst collected six hits and four RBI for the Raiders that included her first collegiate home run.
Game 1| Samford 4, Colgate 3
It didn't take the Raiders long to get the scoring started in game one on Thursday.
Herbst led off the game with a solo home run, the first of her collegiate career, and Colgate added two more runs in the opening frame. Taylor Ludwick and Morgan Farrah both scored on a wild pitch.
Samford answered Colgate with a single run in the first inning. The Bulldogs then took the lead when they sent three runs across the plate in the bottom of the third inning. The go-ahead runs scored on a two-out double.
Herbst finished the game 4-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Game 2| Samford 8, Colgate 7 (8 innings)
Once again Colgate jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. This time the Raiders posted the runs in the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Elizabeth Nitka and a two-run single off the bat of Herbst.
Herbst drove in her fourth run of the day and third of the game with a single in the fourth inning that increased the Raiders' lead to 4-0.
Kaitlyn Borruso didn't surrender a hit until two outs in the fourth inning. She then gave up a two-out, two-run home run in the same inning that cut the Colgate lead in half.
Steph Jacoby blasted a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning that increased the Raiders' lead to 7-2. The shot was her first of the season and seventh of her career.
Samford put five runs on the board in the fifth inning that tied the score at 7-7 and sent the game-winning run across with a two-out single to center fielder in the bottom of the eighth.
Herbst, Nikta and Jacoby all recorded two hits in the game for Colgate.
Despite tossing nearly four hitless innings in the circle, Burruso, who left the game after four innings, got the no decision.
