GREENVILLE, N.C. – Kaitlyn Borruso tossed four scoreless innings of relief but Colgate couldn't get the bats going in a 2-0 decision to Rutgers in the Pirate Clash tournament finale Sunday at East Carolina's MRJ Family Stadium.
Colgate's 6-4 record matches its best record through 10 games since 2000. The Raiders also started 6-4 during the shortened 2020 season.
Borruso relieved
Mia Edwards in the top of the third inning and allowed one hit with two strikeouts over the final 4 1/3 innings. Unfortunately Rutgers did its damage early with a home run in the top of the first to open the scoring.
The Scarlet Knights doubled their lead in the third but from there it turned into a pitchers' duel. Borruso retired eight straight batters, worked around a single in the sixth, and fired a perfect 1-2-3 top of the seventh to keep it a two-run game.
Colgate was limited to one hit in the game and it was a single by
Jillian Herbst in the bottom of the third.
Meaghan Houk also walked in the inning to put two runners on base but the Raiders could not cash in on one of their better scoring chances.
The Raiders also had two baserunners in the bottom of the fourth after
Morgan Farrah walked and
Steph Jacoby reached on an error but they would be Colgate's final baserunners after a flyout ended the inning scoreless.
Ashley Hitchcock pitched a complete game for Rutgers, striking out seven over seven innings.
