McFadden Named to Defensive Staff

Experienced Coach Comes from Lafayette

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate University Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach Stan Dakosty '05 has announced the hiring of long-time Lafayette College defensive coach Douglas McFadden as the Raiders' assistant coach for defensive backs.

"Everyone here at Colgate Football is excited to welcome Doug and his family to the Colgate community. He comes to us with a wealth of experience as a defensive backs coach, and has been one of the most respected coaches in the Patriot League for over the past decade," Dakosty says of McFadden's hire. "Doug is a great coach, but a better person. It was always easy to see his players were well coached, but what stood out the most over the years is how hard they played for him.

"Throughout this process, the more you asked about Doug, the more it became apparent that he is in this profession for the right reasons: to develop his players both on and off the field, and to build relationships that stretch beyond football. Colgate football is lucky to have him on board and he'll have an immediate impact on the program as we build toward our next Patriot League championship."

McFadden began working at Lafayette in 2009 as the defensive secondary and punt team coach. In 2013 he retained his position with the defensive backs and was elevated to special teams coordinator. As special teams coordinator, McFadden's units ranked as highly as fourth in the FCS subdivision in kickoff returns and eighth in punt returns of the 128 FCS teams. In 2017 Lafayette concentrated his skills on the secondary, and in 2020 McFadden was named defensive coordinator, where he led a unit that was nationally ranked for pass defense (14th), total defense (34th), and was second in the Patriot League for total defense.

Prior to his tenure at Lafayette, McFadden spent five years at Fort Hays (Kansas) State as assistant head coach with positional responsibilities for the defensive secondary and special teams. He was secondary and special teams coach at South Dakota State University from 2003 through 2005 and also coached at Langston University and Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College.

McFadden played cornerback for Southwest Baptist University from 1995-1998 and played professionally for the Wichita Warlords for a season. He is a two-time recipient of the NFL Bill Walsh Minority Internship, working with the Miami Dolphins in 2019 and the Cleveland Browns in 2014, and in 2019 attended the NFL-NCAA Coaches Academy.

"I'm excited to work with Coach Dakosty," McFadden says. "He is such a great person and (Colgate assistant coach) Jordan Belfiori and I met at the NFL-NCAA leadership academy three years ago. He is cut from the same cloth as Coach Dakosty. That was important to me and a part of the reason why I wanted to be here. The tradition at Colgate University speaks for itself and we're committed to winning championships here!"

McFadden is married to the former Susan Cochran and has three daughters, Olivia, Gabrielle and Payton.
