Colgate Downed by Delaware 72-68

Raiders can’t capitalize late, drop first game of Cathedral Classic

PHILADELPHIA – Colgate couldn't capitalize on two late possessions trailing by two points and fell to Delaware 72-68 in the first round of the Cathedral Classic Friday at the Palestra.

Delaware took its first lead since the early stages of the first half when Jameer Nelson Jr. hit a 3-pointer to put the Blue Hens on top 46-43 with 11:13 left. Colgate never led again but it was still a three-point game 69-66 with less than a minute left in regulation.

Oliver Lynch-Daniels, who scored all 14 of his points after halftime, made it a one-point margin 69-68 after driving inside for back-to-back buckets. Jyare Davis, who scored 20 of his team-leading 24 points in the second half, made 1-of-2 from the line on Delaware's next offensive trip to make it 70-68 with 23 ticks left.

Down by two with a chance to tie or take the lead on two straight possessions, Colgate was blocked on both opportunities. First, Braeden Smith, and then Lynch-Daniels. LJ Jones' block with four seconds left sealed the game, and the Blue Hens finished it from the free throw line.

Colgate was led by Tucker Richardson, who finished with 16 points. Lynch-Daniels scored 14 and Jeff Woodward tallied a season-high 13 points. Smith, Richardson, and Woodward pulled down six rebounds apiece to lead the Raiders on the glass.

Colgate led for most of the first half. Smith, Brady Cummins, and Chandler Baker swished three consecutive treys to establish an early 18-12 lead at the 10:12-mark of the opening term.

Richardson drained his first trey and then a driving layup by Smith extended Colgate's lead to double-digits for the first time 25-15.

Delaware earned two second-chance points off turnovers to slash the lead to 25-19 with 3:59 left in the half.
The Blue Hens started 0-for-9 from behind the arc, but Christian Ray hit their first of the half off a turnover in a 7-2 spurt that cut the margin to 29-26 at the intermission.

Delaware outscored (46-39) and outrebounded (18-17) the Raiders in the second half to take the victory.

Colgate shot 45 percent (27-of-60) from the field and connected on 4-for-11 in both halves to finish 8-for-22 (36.4%) from behind the arc. The Raiders were 6-of-12 from the free throw line.

Delaware shot 56 percent in the second half to flip a three-point halftime deficit into a four-point victory margin. Davis (24) and Nelson (21) led the Blue Hens offensively.

Head Coach Matt Langel

On the result:
"We have a chance to be a really good team but the game is 40 minutes long and we have to play it in a consistent fashion. We weren't attentive enough to the details and ultimately let their two best players score too many points. Hard lesson to learn because of how we positioned ourselves with the lead for most of the first half. We just didn't do enough to get the result we wanted."

On the final 25 seconds:
"We made a couple of great plays on the defensive end to give ourselves a chance. A lot of times the best shot we're going to get is when we're attacking a defense that's backing up rather than calling a timeout and trying to run a set play. Delaware made a couple of great defensive plays at the end. I trust our guys but tonight we just didn't have the awareness or poise about us to make sure we were going to get the shot that we needed to."

On facing Penn Saturday:
"We have to flush the frustration from tonight's game and start preparing for a Penn team that has played a tough schedule, has a lot of depth and is very well coached. Fortunately, we have another chance in less than 24 hours to get back out there and play better."

Colgate (4-3) will look to bounce back on Saturday when the Raiders face Penn at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
