Comeback Falls Short to Duquesne

Raiders nearly erase two double-digit deficits in 85-80 decision

AKRON, Ohio – Colgate faced two separate 16-point second-half deficits and couldn't quite complete the comeback in an 85-80 loss to Duquesne Friday night at LeBron James Arena.

Trailing 51-35 early in the second half, the Raiders turned the game upside down with a 20-5 scoring blitz – and they did it in less than five minutes. Oliver Lynch-Daniels swished three 3-pointers during the surge, and his third from behind the arc tied the game at 55-55 with 11:59 showing.

The Dukes countered with a 23-6 run before Colgate fought back once more. Trailing by 16 again (77-61) with 5:46 left, the Raiders found another gear and turned it into a one-possession game late. Ryan Moffatt scored 10 points during Colgate's 19-5 run, capped off by another 3-pointer, to cut the deficit to 82-80 with 30 seconds left.

Unfortunately the Dukes, who allowed the Raiders back into the game with three straight turnovers and shaky free-throw shooting down the stretch, made just enough shots when they counted to hold on for the 85-80 decision.

Four Raiders scored in double figures, led by Moffatt's 21. Lynch-Daniels 17, Keegan Records 13, and Tucker Richardson 10. Richardson added a career-high nine assists.

Neither team could miss early on. The first media timeout came 33 combined points and seven made 3-pointers later at the six-minute mark. Moffatt, Lynch-Daniels, and Richardson all knocked down early treys. On the other hand, Duquesne's Dae Dae Grant made his first four baskets and carried the Dukes out front 25-17.

Sam Thomson was Colgate's spark with six consecutive points to trim the deficit to 28-26. Duquesne kept riding the three-ball to build a 48-34 lead at halftime.

The Raiders, who only led for 16 seconds, fought hard to bring the game to one possession before ultimately dropping the five-point decision, 85-80.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Matt Langel

"As we would expect, there was no quit in the group. Unfortunately, we dug ourselves far too deep of a hole in the first half with too many turnovers and missed assignments on the defensive end. Credit Duquesne, they made us pay by making shots and getting offensive rebounds when we didn't.

"Instead of battling back from down 16 twice, to have a chance to win against a team of Duquesne's caliber, what I'd like to see is for those runs to give us a chance to play with the lead instead of fighting just to be even.

"Certainly, some things to learn and address with a big week of four games ahead of us. I'm confident our guys will respond in preparation and be more ready to go than we were tonight."
