HAMILTON — Ella Murphy and
Allison Lemmon each scored goals in the first quarter to lift Colgate to a 2-1 victory over Stonehill in a Tuesday matinee at Tyler's Field.
Murphy scored the Raiders' first goal of the game just over four and a half minutes into the first to put them ahead 1-0.
Bronwen Rees-Wiedemann fired a shot that deflected off the goalie's pad and bounced out to Murphy. The junior dribbled to the right and ripped a shot from about halfway out of the shooting circle that landed in the lower left corner of the goal.
With time ticking down at the end of the first quarter,
Tyler Argilagos tipped a pass toward the goal to
Allison Lemmon who finished off a shot from close range with one second remaining to make it 2-0 Raiders. The goal was Argilagos' first of her collegiate career.
The Raiders dominated the first half, outshooting the Skyhawks 12-3 while also holding strong on defense, preventing Stonehill from recording a shot on goal.
Colgate had five penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes.
Amanda Allen,
Dani Palmer, Murphy, and Rees-Wiedemann each got a shot off on four of those five corners, with three landing on goal.
In the second, Colgate had more chances from
Sarah Killcommons who fired a shot wide, and
Alice Walton, who had her shot blocked.
The Skyhawks had back-to-back corners at the end of the second, but the Raiders' defense prevailed again.
The Raiders came out firing in the third, looking to add to their lead, but they could not get one past a hot Skyhawk's goalie.
Murphy recorded three shots in the third, two of which came back-to-back off the Raiders' lone corner in the quarter with 15 seconds remaining.
Aaliyah Linfoot and
Hannah Marcotrigiano also logged shots on goal in the third, but both got stopped by the goalie.
Stonehill cut Colgate's lead to one when it scored five minutes into the fourth. Meghan Bean played a long pass into the circle that Madi Weber got her stick on before
Anna Unger could clear it away as she tapped it into the goal to make it a 2-1 game.
Unger made a big save with four minutes remaining to prevent a potential equalizer as the Raiders held on for the 2-1 win.
Colgate outshot Stonehill 26-6, including 16-2 in shots on goal. The Raiders also finished with nine corners in the game.
