HAMILTON —The Colgate field hockey team fell 2-1 to Holy Cross on Friday evening at Tyler's Field.
It was the Crusaders who got on the board first. With a little over seven minutes remaining Meggan Fourie played a ball ahead into the shooting circle to Isabell Henderson who deked out
Anna Unger and finished off a shot from close range to put Holy Cross up 1-0.
The Raiders did not let the lead last long as just under three minutes later, they equalized after being awarded their first penalty corner. Colgate could not get a shot from the corner, and Holy Cross attempted to clear it away but was unsuccessful as
Sarah Killcommons picked up the ball, dribbled into the shooting circle, and fired a long-distance shot into the cage to tie it up at 1-1.
Colgate nor Holy Cross could pull ahead in the second quarter as there was lots of back-and-forth action, but neither side could get much going offensively. The Raiders had one shot in the quarter off the stick of
Grace Schmelzinger, but she got denied by the Crusaders' goalkeeper.
Colgate had another penalty corner with 3:04 remaining in the third.
Amanda Allen fired a shot from the corner, but it got saved by the goalie.
Unger came off her line and made a diving stop at the end of the quarter to prevent another possible goal for the Crusaders. The senior finished with a pair of saves in goal for Colgate.
The Raiders had a couple of more chances in the fourth. Colgate got awarded another penalty corner with just over five minutes remaining.
Ella Murphy had a good look at the goal but fired a shot wide.
Holy Cross finished with a slight edge in shots at 8-7. Both teams fired four shots on goal. Colgate also had three penalty corners in the game, compared to the Crusaders' two.

Head Coach April Cornell-DeAngelis
"We lost a very tight match today and it came down to execution in the two circles. We definitely need to draw more offensive corners to give us more scoring opportunities. We did control the speed and pace of the game well with our quick free hits and good ball speed in the back field which allowed us to play our game."
