Raiders Blanked by Columbia

Colgate Unable to Capitalize Despite Many Strong Opportunities

NEW YORK   A pair of second quarter goals pushed Columbia over Colgate on Sunday afternoon.

The Raiders came out firing in the first quarter with a series of early shots from Sarah Killcommoms and Rachel Alderfer.

Just one minute into the second quarter, the Lions took the lead when Brooke Gasser scored off a penalty corner.

A few minutes later, Kali Williams was presented with a chance to equalize but her shot went just wide.

Columbia doubled their lead when Ellie Decker found the back of the net.

In the third, a penalty corner for the Lions led to two consecutive shots that Anna Unger saved to prevent the home team from increasing their lead.

Unger's 18 saves matched the career-high she set just one day earlier at Yale.

The Raiders put up a strong fourth quarter, outshooting Columbia 7-0.

A penalty corner one minute into the fourth led to two shots for Colgate. Ella Murphy had hers saved and Carter Leahy put one just wide.

With 10:45 remaining in the game, Ella Corbett was fed a pass in close and then turned for an open shot that she fired just to the left of the goal.

The final and best chance for the Raiders came off a penalty corner with just over two minutes remaining. Murphy ripped a shot toward the left side of the goal that forced Columbia's goalkeeper to make a big diving save.

Colgate finished the game outshooting the Lions 16-14, including shots on goal at 6-4.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach April Cornell

"We really felt like yesterday wasn't our best performance against Yale and today we made a few changes and played a really strong game. We created a lot of opportunities inside the circle but we just need to find a way to put it in the back of the net. Our defense and Anna were very steady in the backfield and the defense did a great job limiting Columbia's shots on goal. If we want to find success against Lehigh next week it will really come down to our toughness and grit inside the two circles."
