Stony Brook Downs Raiders 24-3

‘Gate Draws first Blood but Stony Brook Takes the Day

Box Score HAMILTON – It took the Stony Brook Seawolves a little over a quarter to get on the board but once they did they managed to control the remainder of the game in a 24-3 victory over Colgate at Andy Kerr Stadium.

The Raiders drew first blood on a Jacob Jaworski 35-yard field goal on the team's first possession capping a 15 play, 72-yard drive that ate up over half of the first quarter. The drive was kept alive by a 15-yard facemask penalty as Stony Brook was sacking Grant Breneman on a third and 14 play.

Stony Brook answered two possessions later on a 64-yard scoring strike from Tyquell Fields to Shawn Harris, Jr., on a post pattern. The grab was Harris, Jr.'s only catch of the day, and the point after gave the Seawolves a 7-3 lead just 1:45 into the second quarter.  With 2:19 remaining in the period Stony Brook drove 32 yards in eight plays following a Raider punt. As time expired in the half, Mike Boyle drilled a 26-yard field goal to up the Seawolve's advantage to 10-3.

Stony Brook added touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters for the final margin. The third quarter score came on a drive that consumed over eight minutes and covered 81 yards. Fields hit paydirt on a quarterback sneak. On the fourth quarter's first possession Ty Son Lawton ran in from 10 yards out capping a four play 69-yard drive. The big play of the drive was a Fields to Delante Hellems, Jr., strike good for 34 yards on first down from the Seawolves 31.

Stony Brook outgained the Raiders 427-240 in total offense. Lawton rushed for 134 yards on 16 carries and Seba Nehket added 98 more. Colgate was able to gain only 53 yards total on the ground.

Jake Spencer had a good day as the Raiders' kickoff return man averaging over 25 yards on three returns. Milton Braasch, II, had a big day on the defensive side of the ball with 11 tackles including five solo and two for losses.
