Raiders Fall to Binghamton in Season Opener

Late Goal Lifts Binghamton Past Colgate in Double Overtime

HAMILTON – A back and forth battle in front of a packed crowd at Beyer-Small '76 Field came to an unfortunate ending as the Colgate men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Binghamton in double overtime on Thursday.

Both teams had a handful of opportunities in the first half. The Raider's closest chance came when Nick Steed ripped a one-time shot off the crossbar.

The second half started a bit slower for Colgate as they were unable to get any shots off in the first 20 minutes.

Binghamton broke the tie in the 67th minute when Oliver Svalander dribbled just inside the 18-yard box and struck one into the top left corner.

Just three minutes later the Raiders responded with an equalizer. Drew Fischer played a long ball into the box that Ryan Krueger settled and placed into the bottom left corner of the goal.

With neither team able to pull ahead the game went to overtime tied at 1-1.

A centering pass by Antonio Ducrot in the 95th minute slipped by two Colgate players before finding the feet of Edward Bass, but his shot would hit the side netting.

With five minutes left In the second overtime period, Steed broke free on a through ball into the box but was unable to get enough power behind it before Binghamton's came out to make a sliding save.

Binghamton obtained a throw-in with 28 seconds left in the game that led to a header finding the back of the net for the game-winner.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Erik Ronning

"I am really proud of the effort our guys put forth. Our guys played with a lot of heart. We created a ton of chances that I think we could have been hungrier on, but there were a lot of good things that happened on the field tonight. We'll take a lot away from this game. It was a fabulous atmosphere for a college soccer game."

"Giving up a goal on a set piece in overtime is not a way we want to concede. It's another area that us coaches and players can work on, and we look forward to continuing to improve. We have to come back to work, recover, and get ready for New Hampshire on Sunday."
