Raiders Announce 2021-22 Men's Basketball Schedule

Defending Champs Open Season at Home vs. Northeastern Nov. 9

2021-22 Colgate Men's Basketball Schedule

HAMILTON — Colgate Men's Basketball head coach Matt Langel announced his team's 2021-22 schedule on Tuesday.

The slate includes 18 Patriot League contests and matchups against opponents from the ACC, American East, Big East, CAA, Ivy League, and MAAC. The 31-game slate includes 13 games on Colgate's Cotterell Court and 18 away from Hamilton.

"We are very much looking forward to the return to a full college basketball schedule," Langel noted. "Although last year's season was historic in many ways, I know that our student-athletes are happy for the return to a full round robin Patriot League schedule and a non league schedule before that. In many ways, I believe this to be the most challenging non-league schedule we will have faced in my time at Colgate."

He went on to say, "In addition to games that will provide great memories and experiences for our student-athletes, we will face programs that have been and will continue to compete at the top of their conferences and in the NCAA tournament. Our games in 2021 will surely prepare us well for 2022 as we navigate the rigors of the Patriot League."

The defending Patriot League champions open their season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 9 versus Northeastern, offering Raider fans the first opportunity to fill the Colgate stands since March 2020. The home opener will feature a pre-game ceremony to unveil 2020-21 Patriot League Tournament Champion and NCAA Tournament banners in celebration of last year's historic season.

The Raiders will then hit the road for a pair of games, first traveling to Raleigh, NC for an early-season test against the Wolfpack of NC State on Nov. 13, before returning north for a much shorter road trip to Ithaca to take on Route 13 rival Cornell on Nov. 16. The Raiders welcome Division III opponent SUNY Poly to Cotterell Court on Nov. 18 for the second home game of the season. Nov. 20 marks a perennial favorite on the Raiders' schedule, when Colgate faces off against Syracuse, coming off an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance, in the famed Carrier Dome.

The Raiders continue their challenging non-conference portion of the schedule with games against Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., on Nov. 24, Niagara at home on Nov. 29, and a road game at Northeastern on Dec. 3 to complete a unique home-and-home series in the same season.

Langel's squad will host Columbia on Dec. 6, before leaving the friendly confines of Cotterell Court for more than a month. The Raiders travel to Pittsburgh Dec. 9, St. John's Dec. 12, and Monmouth Dec. 19 as part of the Gotham Classic, before closing out the non-conference slate and the calendar year at Vermont Dec. 22.

The Raiders will begin 2022 Patriot League play with a fortuitous 13-game winning streak against conference opponents. Colgate opens its title defense on the road at Lafayette on New Year's Day. The Leopards are one of five Patriot League teams Colgate did not face off against in 2020-21 due to a modified league scheduling model.

After visiting Lehigh for a Tuesday night matchup on Jan. 4, the Raiders will finally return to Hamilton to host American on Jan. 7 and Army West Point on Jan. 10.

Colgate travels to Navy on Jan. 13 for its first meeting with the Midshipment since Feb. 8, 2020, when the Raiders swept the season series with a 67-60 victory. A home game against Holy Cross on Jan. 16 and a road match-up against Bucknell in Lewisburg on Jan. 19 follow, before back-to-back home games Jan. 22 versus Lafayette and Jan. 26 versus Loyola — a rematch of last year's Patriot League championship that sent the Raiders to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years.

On Jan. 29 the Raiders head to Beantown for a tussle with Boston University, Colgate's most familiar foe last season. The two teams faced each other a total of five times, with Colgate winning all five, including the Patriot League quarterfinal in Hamilton, 77-69 on March 6.

The shortest month of the year is action-packed for the Raiders, featuring a balanced four games at home and four on the road. Colgate welcomes Bucknell to Cotterell Court on Feb. 2 in a rematch of last year's Patriot League semifinal. The Raiders travel to American on Feb. 5, return home to host Lehigh on Feb. 9, conclude season series with road tilts against Loyola Feb. 12 and Army West Point Feb. 16, play host to Boston University Feb. 20, make the trip to Holy Cross on Feb. 23, before closing out the regular season against Navy on Senior Day Feb. 26.

Postseason Format
The Patriot League Tournament once again continues with its home-site format. The first round is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1 at the home court of the Nos. 7 and 8 seeds.

The top four seeds in the tournament will play at home for the quarterfinal round on Thursday, March 3 with the semifinals at the two highest-remaining seeds on Sunday, March 6. The championship game will be played at the highest-remaining seed on Wednesday, March 9.
