HAMILTON – Scoring chances were plentiful but Colgate couldn't cash in and Loyola made the most of its opportunities in a 3-0 decision on a chilly Saturday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Prior to the match Colgate recognized its seven seniors, who were playing in their final Saturday home game at Beyer-Small '76 Field. The pregame ceremony celebrated the seniors' accomplishments, which includes a Patriot League title and NCAA tournament run among many successes in the classroom and in the community.
Shots were dead even at 11-11 and the possession report showed a narrow 52-48 margin, but of Colgate's 11 shots just two found their way on target. The Greyhounds turned five shots on target into three goals, including two in the second half to put the game away.
An unlucky bounce led to an early 1-0 lead for the visitors. Less than four minutes into the game an errant pass backwards gave Kelan Swales an uncontested breakaway for his first of two goals on the night. His second goal came two minutes into the second half to extend the visitors' lead to 2-0.
After mustering one shot in the first half, Colgate broke through with 10 in the final 45 minutes.
Edward Bass had a great opportunity in the 52nd minute, but his shot was just wide. Four minutes later he forced a diving save from Loyola keeper Chase Vosvick.
Despite Colgate's pressure in the offensive end, an odd-man rush the other way helped Loyola pad its lead in the 62nd minute on a goal by Albert Kang.
A flurry of shots down the stretch by
Bobby Foose,
Adam Fam, and
Alejandro Coury could not quite get past the Greyhounds.
Dominic Galietta saw a high header saved after Fam sailed one just over the crossbar on a corner kick by Foose.
The Raiders outshot Loyola 10-4 in the final frame but could not capitalize and Loyola held on to defeat Colgate 3-0.
