Colgate Improves to 2-0 In Patriot League Play

Raiders Outlast Georgetown, 28-21

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the first win out of the way last week, now Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Coach Stan Dakosty has claimed his first-ever road victory as Colgate hung on against Georgetown 28-21.

The Hoyas suffered their third straight loss dropping to 1-3 (0-1 Patriot League) while Colgate has won two in a row after starting the season with three straight defeats.

Colgate started off hot, scoring touchdowns on its first three possessions. Grant Breneman hooked up with Garrett Oakey for the first touchdown of the day, a 20-yard pass on 2nd and 6.

The second touchdown came off a five-yard touchdown run by John Cox, his first as a Colgate Raider. Georgetown was able to score on a 14-play 74-yard drive by converting two fourth downs to cut the lead to 14-7. The Raiders wasted no time in taking that 14-point lead back after the first collegiate touchdown run by Michael Brescia from one yard out.

An unlucky bounce for Colgate on a Georgetown punt shifted momentum as the ball skipped off a Raider and was recovered by the home team. Georgetown then went on to score a touchdown on its last possession of the first half and its first possession of the second half to even things up at 21.

Colgate dealt with more adversity as Breneman exited the game, but the signal caller duo of Harry Kirk and Brescia got the job done on a 10-play, 62-yard drive that started in the third quarter and spilled into the fourth. Kirk threw his first collegiate touchdown pass, a 25-yarder to Oakey.

Georgetown had a couple chances late but William Gruber made his first interception of the season with 46 seconds left, sealing the Raiders ninth straight win against the Hoyas.

Colgate had a season-high four sacks, Milton Braasch II had two of them. Shelby Pruett only punted three times today but he made the most of it. On punt No. 1, the freshman registered a career long 59-yarder.

It's as easy as 1-2-3 for Oakey, who had his second 100-yard receiving game today. Against Bucknell in 2019 and today he had an identical 123 receiving yards.

Even though Kirk and Brescia led the game-winning drive, Breneman started the game making him the only Colgate quarterback to ever go 4-0 against the Hoyas as the starting quarterback.

Breneman is now fourth all-time in Colgate career passing with 5,586 yards.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Stan Dakosty

"This feels great. This one was a special one because we faced adversity. Our kids came back. Georgetown fought us. Our kids didn't flinch. They fought. They are such a resilient group. Guys stepped up and made plays which was great. A lot of credit to Georgetown. They played really hard. They have a lot of good players. They made some plays as well. This one is special. The last one got carried away in the second half a little bit with the score. To make big plays in meaningful situations in the fourth quarter, whether it was coaches making calls or the players making plays, to get that type of win under our belt is a pretty special thing."
