PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown started quickly and never looked back en route to a 31-10 win over Colgate on Saturday.
Colgate remains winless in non-conference competition but still perfect in the Patriot League for an overall 2-4 mark. This is the first time these two schools met up on the gridiron since 1996.
In Brown's first three games, the Bears had seven total first-quarter points. They surpassed that total Saturday, putting up 10 in the opening 15. Brown's first possession ended in a 23-yard field goal by Christopher Maron.
Colgate was on the move looking to match Brown and score on the opening drive, but a
Harry Kirk fumble was returned 74 yards for a touchdown by Shane Prevot. The last time Colgate was a victim of a fumble return for a touchdown was in 2019, an 87-yard TD sprint by Jelani Taylor of Cornell.
Colgate came into this game with zero lost fumbles in five games but coughed the ball up twice in Brown territory where the Bears recovered. It looked like Colgate got right back into the game as
Jake Spencer scored on a punt return but a flag against the maroon and white nullified the touchdown.
This was actually the second rush touchdown wiped away as
Michael Brescia suffered the same fate on the first possession. A season-high eight penalties called against Colgate Saturday for 66 yards which was also a season-high. Brown scored one more touchdown in the first half taking a 17-point cushion into the locker room.
In the third quarter,
Tyler Flick snagged his first career interception. Thanks to the pick, the Raiders got on the board with a 43-yard field goal by
Spencer Biscoe. This was the first collegiate field goal attempt for the freshman from Landisville, Pa., and it was the longest boot through the uprights for a Colgate kicker since Chris Puzzi nailed a 47-yarder against William & Mary in 2018.
Brown put to bed any thought of a comeback scoring touchdowns late in the third quarter and midway in the fourth to go up 31-3. Colgate showed plenty of fight with the young quarterback duo of Kirk and Brescia. Kirk got the start but both played a lot and Brescia scored the only Colgate touchdown of the day on the last possession for the Raiders, a seven-yard scamper. The freshman from Hinsdale, Ill., picked up his second collegiate rushing touchdown in consecutive weeks. Biscoe came on to deliver his first collegiate extra point, making the score 31-10 Brown, which ended up being the final tally.
Milton Braasch II had a career-high 13 tackles today and registered his second forced fumble of the season. The first one came in the last game against Georgetown. Brown quarterback E.J. Perry threw for 351 yards which is the most passing yards by an opposing signal caller since Richmond's Kyle Lauletta racked up 306 in 2017. Brown continues to be one of the best in the FCS on the final down as Brown is 9-12 on fourth-down conversions going 2-2 today.

Colgate Head Coach Stan Dakosty
"We have a good enough football team to win that game. Brown did a great job and they beat us. All the credit to them. Their quarterback had a great game. Their defense played really well all game and those guys stepped up and made some plays. I told the team all week, we can play with anybody but anybody can play with us. No talk about records or anything like that. It was all about us all week and we got to continue that but it shows that other teams can step up and make plays and they did. They did a great job today. All the credit to them."
