Top Men's Basketball Assistant Coaches: Patriot League

HAMILTON –
Colgate Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Dave Klatsky was recently named the No. 1 assistant coach in Stadium Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman's Patriot League assistant coach rankings.

Klatsky enters his 10th season with the Raiders in 2020. He's helped guide Colgate to three consecutive Patriot League championship appearances, including the program's first title and NCAA Tournament showing in over two decades in 2019.

Klatsky was hired by head coach Matt Langel, the three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, in 2011 after spending four years as an assistant at Stevens Tech, while also working in finance for Knight Capital Group in New York City. His analytic approach that brought him success on Wall Street has carried over to today's world of advanced basketball measures. Klatsky oversees many facets of the program including recruiting, practice planning, scouting, game preparation, and spreadsheet management. Klatsky's expertise in basketball's advanced statistics has helped keep Colgate on the forefront of efficient play. He is the host of Stat Chat, a podcast that analyzes various topics surrounding in-depth basketball statistics.

"Dave was an extremely successful point guard in his playing days," Langel said in Goodman's report. "His vision of how the game should be played and his understanding of what it takes to be a champion carry over to how he teaches and helps develop our student-athletes. His intelligence and the analytical mind that helped him to success on Wall Street in his previous profession provides a unique, creative and valuable insight into today's world of advanced basketball analytics and statistics. Ultimately, however, I believe that over nine years, without Dave's high character, strong work ethic, competitive instincts and continued commitment to our program, Colgate basketball would not be what it is today."

Former assistant coach Mike Jordan, who spent eight years in Hamilton, landed at No. 4 in the rankings. Colgate was the only team to have two assistants make the list.

Langel and his staff have reaped the benefits of their long-term commitment in recent years, leading the Raiders to back-to-back 20-win campaigns and a program-best 25 wins in 2020. Since 2017, Colgate has compiled 68 wins, 39 league victories and two regular season championships – all Patriot League-best numbers during that stretch.
