POTSDAM, N.Y. – In a high-scoring overtime final, the Colgate men's hockey program upset No. 8/9 Clarkson with a 5-4 victory on the road. In the nonconference matchup, 10 different Raiders earned points, including four who earned the first points of their career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team wasted time waiting to get on the board, as Clarkson scored on its first power play opportunity less than two minutes into the game. It didn't stay that way for long though as Colgate quickly answered behind
Ethan Manderville's first of his career just 3:05 after the drop of the puck.
Seeing some alternating penalties, the ECAC foes headed to 4-on-4 play, where
Trevor Cosgrove scored from the point before the officials waved it off. Midway through the period, Clarkson went on to add a tally through traffic to make it 2-1.
Lots of lamp lighting was still to be done in the first as there was a Young-to-Young connection as Colton scored his first of the season with just 2:09 remaining in the period. Another 1:03 later, Lunn put the Raiders on top for the first time at 3-2 with his first of the season. With just 18.4 on the clock, Clarkson tied the game at 3-3 with a bounce off the blocker.
The second period had players tied up in the penalty box early, as the Raiders found themselves up with a 4-on-3 man advantage. It was one that
Matt Verboon would score on for Colgate's first power play goal of the year to increase its lead to 4-3, but within two minutes, Clarkson answered yet again to make it 4-4.
In goal, first-year
Carter Gylander made his appearance for the second half, and with a swift blocker save in the final minutes, the teams would skate to the locker room in a 4-4 tie.
The third period opened with the Raiders drawing a pair of penalties for 00:50 of a 5-on-3 advantage. Although
Colton Young slid the puck past the line, the Raiders had a goal wiped off for the second time on the night. Colgate went on to build a stretch of minutes in the offensive zone, hungry for that topping goal. As Gylander made a couple of key saves in the final minutes, the Raiders headed to their first 3-on-3 overtime game.
The extra session saw early action on either end, before
Tyler Jeanson poked a chance midway through that was stopped by a pad save. It was with 1:40 remaining that Verboon backhanded the rebound for his second of the night and the overtime game-winner over No. 8/9 Clarkson for the 5-4 victory.
