Hall of Fame Release
HAMILTON – Former Colgate men's basketball star Carl Braun was inducted over the weekend into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, by the Veterans Committee.
Â
Braun played two seasons for the Raiders, 1945-46 and 1946-47. He led Colgate in scoring that first campaign with 294 points, helping the team to a 12-6 finish. Braun split time between military service and the hardcourt the following year before playing out the last half of the schedule alongside the great Ernie Vandeweghe.
Â
Braun died in 2010 at age 82.
Â
A Brooklyn native, Braun went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA, the first 12 with his hometown New York Knicks. He averaged double figures in scoring each of his first 11 seasons, finishing with a 13.5 mark over 788 career games played and scoring 10,625 points.
Â
Considered one of the premier guards of the 1950s, Braun was joined in that Knicks backcourt by his former Colgate teammate Vandeweghe and Hall of Famer Dick McGuire.
Â
Braun led the Knicks in scoring during his first seven seasons – he did not play during the 1950-51 or 1951-52 campaigns due to military service. Braun set a then-NBA record by scoring 47 points in a game during the 1948 calendar year.
Â
Braun played in five NBA All-Star Games and made 40 playoff appearances, averaging 14.0 points in the postseason. His final campaign was with the Boston Celtics, with Braun playing in 48 regular season and six playoff games during two series en route to winning the 1962 NBA title.
Â
The Class of 2019 will be enshrined Sept. 6 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the home of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
