Colgate Takes Two From Siena

Raiders Walk Off in Nine-Inning Affair, Complete Sweep with 8-5 Win in Game 2

HAMILTON – Meghan Romero cranked a walk-off single in the ninth inning of a 5-4 victory in Game 1 and Colgate kept its rally caps on to complete the doubleheader sweep of Siena with an 8-5 victory in Game 2 on Wednesday evening in non-league action at Eaton Street Field.

Colgate 5, Siena 4 (9 Inn.)
Colgate fell into an early hole in the opening game after Siena plated three runs in the top of the third. Natalie Marchese poked a bases-loaded single into left and all three runners came around to score after it was misplayed to stake the visitors to a 3-0 advantage.

The Raiders were held to one hit through the first three innings but Romero ignited a three-run fourth with a leadoff single up the middle. Nicole Rounsavill lined a single through the infield and came around to score on a single by Virginia Irby to knot the score at 3-3.

Another leadoff base hit paid dividends for the Raiders in the sixth. Morgan Farrah opened the frame with a single and McKenna Saunders, who entered as a pinch-runner, crossed the plate after Christiana Cottrell dunked an RBI single down the right field line.

Kaitlyn Borruso entered in the circle in the third inning and settled the Saints' bats until Amanda Dodson singled in the seventh and scored on a two-out single by Patricia Kalesse to send the game to extra innings.

Borruso stood tall in the eighth and ninth before the Raiders backed her up in the home half of the ninth. Cottrell reached on an error and moved up on a single by Baillie Jorth.

With two on and two outs, Romero yanked a hard ground ball past the outstretched glove of Madysen Cossack at first base and Cottrell raced home from second to score the winning run and give the Raiders the 5-4 victory.

Colgate 8, Siena 5
Colgate carried over its momentum to Game 2 with runs in each of the first two innings to open a comfortable lead. Irby scored in the first on a fielder's choice by Rounsavill, before hammering an RBI triple in a four-run second that stretched the Raiders out to a 5-0 advantage.

The Saints battled back to cut the margin to 5-3 in the fifth, but Jessica Hay came out of the bullpen and stranded two runners in scoring position to hold the lead.

Mia Guevarra smashed her third homer of the season in the fifth and added another insurance run in the sixth with an RBI double to expand Colgate's lead to 8-5.

Borruso came in for two innings of relief and locked down her first career save with a scoreless seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep, 8-5.

FROM THE SOURCE
• Colgate head coach Marissa Lamison-Myers:

"Today was a great test for our pitchers and offense. Kaitlyn did a tremendous job in the circle for us today. She was able to keep their hitters at bay long enough for us to battle. Mia had a standout day for us at the plate. She made a big defensive play and of course hit the long ball. These wins were a great motivator for this weekend."
