Raiders Roll Past Lafayette in Sunday Sweep

Colgate Runs Win Streak to Six with 3-2 and 9-1 Victories

HAMILTON – Colgate ran its win streak to a season-best six games with 3-2 and 9-1 victories over Lafayette in a Patriot League doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon at Eaton Street Field.

Colgate 3, Lafayette 2
Colgate wasted little time getting on the board in the opener. The first four Raiders reached base safely. Virginia Irby hammered the first pitch she saw up the middle for a single and Meghan Romero was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base.

Mia Guevarra followed with a two-run single to left before Nicole Rounsavill pounded an RBI double that carried to the wall in left and extended Colgate's lead to 3-0.

Back-to-back walks led to a run for Lafayette in the top of the second but Kaitlyn Borruso limited the damage with a groundout and a strikeout stranding two runners on base.

The Leopards cut into the deficit once again in the third when Erin Scott came around to score on a single just inside the chalk down the left field line by Malori Pojar.

Borruso stood tall from there, working around a one-out single in the fourth and setting the Leopards down in order in the fifth to cling to the 3-2 advantage.

The Raiders were unable to cash in with the bases loaded in the sixth, but it did not matter as Borruso worked around a two-out walk in the seventh to secure the 3-2 victory for the Raiders.

Colgate 9, Lafayette 1 (5 Inn.)
Game 2 started was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Colgate used a two-out rally to take control. Romero was hit by a pitch for the second time and Rounsavill worked a walk before Morgan Farrah crushed a three-run homer to left center.

Lauren La Terra started things back up with an RBI double and Christiana Cottrell drove her home on a slide-in triple that caromed off the top of the fence in left and fell back into play.

The Raiders tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth. Guevarra clubbed a double off the wall in left center and came around to score on a single up the middle by Rounsavill to stretch the Raiders' lead to 7-0.

Lafayette's Natasha Miner started the fifth with a single up the middle and scored on an RBI groundout by Brooke Wensel to make it 7-1. Jessica Hay, who entered the circle in the third inning of a scoreless game, stranded two runners on base with an inning-ending strikeout.

The first four Raiders to the plate in the bottom of the fifth reached base safely. Cottrell worked a leadoff walk before back-to-back singles by Rebecca Johnson and Irby loaded the bases.

With nobody out, Romero stepped to the plate and ended the game with a two-run double to deep center as the Raiders secured the run-rule victory, 9-1.

It was nice to see our bats come alive with big hits from Morgan and Meghan down the stretch. I couldn't be prouder of this group for how they handled this weekend and today!"
