CLEARWATER, Fla. – Bella Crow pitched a complete-game shutout to lead Colgate to a 1-0 win over Providence and a doubleheader split after the Raiders fell to Florida A&M 16-3 in Game 2 on Saturday at the E.C. Moore Complex.
Colgate moved to 11-12 on the season with the split. Providence fell to 10-10 after the loss, while Florida A&M improved to 5-15 with the win.
Game 1: Colgate 1, Providence 0
Crow tossed another gem to lead Colgate to its fourth straight win. The sophomore hurled a complete-game shutout and allowed just two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. She faced 24 batters in the game, just three over the minimum.
Providence pitcher Megan McCune went the distance as well and allowed one unearned run in the sixth inning that made the difference.
With two outs and nobody on in the sixth,
Sabrina Odierno kept the inning alive with a double to right center. One batter later, Odierno crossed home plate as the game's first run on a throwing error off a bunt from
Rebecca Johnson.
The Friars brought the go-ahead run to the plate and had a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but Crow battled back with three straight outs to cap off the shutout.
Colgate recorded a hit in every inning. Five Raiders had a base hit in the win, led by
Morgan Farrah and Odierno, who each had two to lead the Raiders offensively.
Game 2: Florida A&M 16, Colgate 3
Florida A&M scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first to open an early lead.
Colgate got on the board in the top of the third. Johnson singled to left field and came around to score two batters later on an RBI base knock from Farrah.
The Rattlers scored eight runs in the bottom of the third to put the game away.
Colgate added two runs in the top of the fourth. Guevarra led off with a single before
McKenna Saunders and Odierno were both hit by pitches to load the bases.
Lauren La Terra followed with a walk to bring home a run and Johnson followed with a fielder's choice to score Saunders. Another hit-by-pitch reloaded the bases, but Colgate was unable to scratch another run across.
Florida A&M coasted form there en route to the 16-3 final score.
