LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell opened an early lead and never looked back en route to a 6-1 victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon in the first of a weekend three-game series at Becker Field.
Colgate fell to 11-13 overall and 0-1 in the Patriot League after the loss. Bucknell improved to 11-15 on the season and 1-0 in league action with the win.
Bucknell jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Marisa Alemany was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Hadley. Anna Gimmestad restarted the inning with a two-out single and Jess Hom brought her home on a single to left to double the Bison lead.
Meghan Romero wasted little time getting the Raiders on the board in the fourth. She took a 2-1 pitch and sent it over the wall in right field for a solo blast to cut the Bucknell lead in half.
After a shaky opening frame,
Bella Crow allowed just one hit over the next three innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Taylor Wolfgang capped off a four-run inning with a two-run double to right center that stretched the Bison lead to 6-1.
Kaitlyn Borruso came in for relief and hurled 1 2/3 scoreless frames, but Colgate was unable to generate an offensive threat over the final two innings in the 6-1 final.
Crow shouldered the loss in the circle, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.
Raeanne Geffert allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts in the complete-game victory for Bucknell. Gimmestad paced the Bison offensively with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.
