Raiders Open 2019 Season Against Vermont

Van Calcar Records Three Goals in Colgate’s 12-9 Loss

HAMILTON – The Colgate women's lacrosse program opened the 2019 season on a snowy afternoon at Beyer-Small '76 Field. Despite a hat trick from Colgate's Danielle Van Calcar, Vermont's strong second half downed the Raiders 12-9 in the season opener.

Vermont earned a quick 2-0 lead less than a minute in but it was narrowed to a one-goal game as Noelle Patterson scored Colgate's first goal of the 2019 campaign. Later capitalizing on a shot clock violation by Vermont, the Raiders propelled the ball down the field before Van Calcar wrapped it around the cage for a 3-2 game. After being awarded a free position shot captain Madeline Barcia tied the game at 3-3 less than 9:00 after the opening draw.

After a flurry of action through the first 10:00 of the game, the teams remained at a 4-3 score for the next 10:00 until Van Calcar tied the game at 4-4. Through a stretch with significant time of possession, the Raiders were relentless with three charges at the net before scoring their fifth goal. Vermont regained the lead once again before the conclusion of the first half when it scored with just 18.7 on the clock.

Another quick start to play, the nonconference foes came out in the second half with three alternating tallies in the first 1:23, including Van Calcar completing her fifth career hat trick when she narrowed Vermont's lead to 7-6. The Catamounts went on a 5-2 run to increase their lead near the midway point of the second half until Tara Atkinson interrupted Vermont's four-goal run. Colgate's late offensive push continued as freshman Jacklyn Hooey scored on a free position shot with 2:31 to narrow the score. A goal in the final minute by newcomer Annelise Kotz concluded the scoring as Vermont held off Colgate's comeback for a 12-9 final.
