HAMILTON – The Colgate women's lacrosse program battled through freezing rain for its first win of the 2019 campaign on Wednesday evening as the Raiders downed Binghamton 7-6 on Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Colgate started the scoring just 54 seconds after the opening draw as
Payton Gabriel earned her first of the season with a shot inside the near post. The Raiders lead was stamped out as Binghamton capitalized on a pair of free position shots and went on a 3-0 run for a lead midway through the first half.
After dodging the defenders
Alissa Masini made it a one-goal game with her first of the season, before recording back-to-back goals to even the slate at 3-3 heading into halftime.
Beginning its own 3-0 run,
Madeline Barcia lifted the Raiders to a 4-3 lead after scoring on a free position shot but Binghamton's persistence tied the game yet again. It was
Noelle Patterson regaining Colgate's lead as she zig-zagged through the defense to put the Raiders back on top minutes later.
Through the elements, Binghamton responded with two straight to gain a 6-5 advantage midway through the second half. After nearly 10:00 without a goal,
Danielle Van Calcar earned her fourth of the season with a low shot past the goalie and the game was tied for the fifth time of the night.
As the clocked ticked down on regulation, it was
Tara Atkinson to seal the scoring as her top shelf shot with just 1:55 remaining claimed Colgate's lead for the final time in the Raiders 7-6 victory.

COACH BEVILLE'S TAKE
"I'm so proud of the way our team battled today. When Binghamton jumped out to an early lead we remained focused, stuck to the game plan, and found a way to tie it up going into halftime. We made some huge plays in the defensive end of the field and during our ride that gave us opportunities to score in the attacking end. Today was a great day to be a Raider!"
