Field Hockey Falls at Holy Cross

Kness Marked Defensive Save in 2-0 Patriot League Loss

WORCESTER, Mass. – After a scoreless opening half, the Colgate field hockey program fell 2-0 at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After starting with lots of play in the midfield, the Raiders looked to enter their offensive circle with a pass by Meghan Minturn. Midway through the quarter, the shot was deflected off the back line to keep it scoreless. When Holy Cross was issued a green card, Colgate's offense looked to take advantage. Shortly thereafter was when Iona MacKillop marked Colgate's best scoring chance of the game thus far but the shot was saved by the keeper to keep it a 0-0 came in the final minutes of the opening half.

The conference foes came out of halftime scoreless as neither were able to get the ball past the keepers. Midway through the third quarter, sophomore goalkeeper Anna Unger made a trio of stellar saves to keep Holy Cross off the board, but a stolen pass came back into the circle. Just minutes later the Crusaders were able to score for a 1-0 advantage.

As the Raiders looked to get back in the one-goal game with the clock winding down on regulation, they gained a man advantage yet again. Despite the efforts of the offense, Holy Cross evened the field remaining ahead with its 1-0 lead late in the quarter. With minutes to go, the Colgate defense broke up a play outside the circle, but a pass was dumped back and shot low for a 2-0 Holy Cross advantage.

The Raiders continued to fight back, looking to capitalize on a pair of corner opportunities in the final minute. Although MacKillop notched a chance off the corner with under a minute remaining in regulation, the ball went just wide on the low stick side, as Holy Cross held out for its 2-0 final in Patriot League play.
