LOWELL, Mass. – The Colgate field hockey program returned to nonconference play on Sunday afternoon, but fell on the road 4-0 to UMass Lowell.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With a quick chance off the penalty corner, UMass Lowell gained a 1-0 edge just 1:02 into the game that would hold through the remainder of the opening quarter. Colgate saw its first chance midway through the second with a shot off their corner opportunity, but
Meredith Rappaport's shot was blocked by the defense. Just before the half concluded, goalkeeper
Anna Unger was able to make an initial save, but Lowell picked up the rebound through the scrum to score for a 2-0 advantage with just 3:07 to go.
The Raiders came out of halftime with a renewed energy that
Iona MacKillop looked to build from. She tallied a shot on goal in the opening minutes, but the River Hawks were opportunistic by scoring in the final minutes of the third quarter with a tip of the ball. As the Raiders looked to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the final 15:00, Lowell scored with a dribbling pass to center for a one-timer in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Despite the late push by the Raiders, Lowell's lead would stand for the 4-0 final on the road.

HEAD COACH APRIL CORNELL'S TAKE
"The team fought hard today. It's hard emotionally after playing such a tough battle yesterday against Holy Cross, but this is one of the most resilient groups of women I have ever coached. In both games, it came down to our execution inside both circles. We are getting opportunities inside our attacking 25 that we are not capitalizing on. My goal going forward is for us to be a team that is stronger on ball and moves the ball quicker."
