Hobart Rallies Past Colgate

Statesmen Score Six in Fourth for 12-11 Comeback; Baddley Career-High Six Ground Balls

GENEVA, N.Y. – Hobart's amazing fourth quarter was just enough to overcome Colgate's fabulous first in a 12-11 Statesmen victory here Tuesday.

The Raiders jumped ahead 5-0 in the opening six minutes and led 8-2 after one quarter. Seven different goal-scorers contributed as Colgate spread the wealth.

But Hobart, which trailed 8-3 at halftime and 9-6 through 45 minutes, scored six times in the fourth quarter to come all the way back. Justin Scott was the main man for the Statesmen, tallying four of his six goals in the final period.

Scott has 11 goals over the last two games in Hobart wins over Binghamton and Colgate.

Chase Wittich scored twice in Colgate's opening flurry and joined Matt Donovan, Duncan Hoskinson and Joe Delaney for the 5-0 lead.

After Scott put the Statesmen on the board, Will Blumenberg and James Caddigan Jr., made it 7-1 Raiders. Chris Aslanian's goal for Hobart with 12 seconds left looked like the capper on the wild and wooly first, but Parker Baddley scored the second of his career to just beat the horn and Colgate led 8-2.

32836Six Raider turnovers in the second quarter limited their shot attempts to just three, but Connor Mullen made four saves during the period and Colgate led 8-3 at intermission.

Hobart narrowed the gap to 8-6 before Hoskinson finally broke the drought with 15 seconds left in the third quarter. Colgate had gone scoreless for all of the second quarter and nearly all of the third.

Griffin Brown scored on a nice feed from Sam Cleveland with 12:48 remaining and the Raiders led 10-6. But Hobart reeled off five in a row – the first three off the stick of Scott and the last two by Ryan Archer and Matthew Pedicine just seven seconds apart with 5:50 to play.

Trailing 11-10, Delaney scored his second of the game with 5:09 on the clock to retie the score.

Scott then wrapped around and found the net with 3:23 remaining to put Hobart in the lead for keeps. Colgate's Nick Salameda forced a turnover in the final 90 seconds and Baddley picked up the loose ball to give the Raiders a chance, but Hobart's Sam Lucchesi saved a late Hoskinson shot and the Statesmen held on.

Bottom Line
Hobart 12, Colgate 11

From the Source
• Colgate head coach Mike Murphy: (On the game) "You've got to give them credit. I was impressed with the effort we gave but Hobart scrapped back and the credit belongs to them.

"We still are trying to find a way to finish ballgames, and it's not just finishing in the fourth quarter. We're up 8-3 at halftime but we got shut out in the second quarter because we started doing silly things on offense.

"We didn't play great complementary lacrosse in terms of offense-defense. We played a lot of defense. I was very impressed with Connor Mullen's effort in the hoop tonight. He gave us the goaltending we needed to win. But it's another game where we have turnovers in the teens and you're giving a good team more opportunities to score.

"We've got to be able to clean that up and we've got a quick turnaround. We jump back into league play and that's the good thing about it. We've got to move off this one and onto the next one."
