ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Colgate men's basketball team erased an eight-point second-half deficit to rally for a key 69-64 road win at Navy Sunday afternoon in front of a nationally-televised audience.
Navy held a 47-39 lead with just under 11 minutes to play, but Colgate used timely shots and a 14-for-15 showing from the free throw line to close the game on a 30-17 run and walk away with the pivotal road victory. The win moves Colgate into a tie for second place in the Patriot League standings and the Raiders complete their first season sweep of the Mids in five years.
Senior
Jordan Swopshire fell one rebound shy of a double-double with a team-best 16 points and nine boards. Senior
Sean O'Brien added 12 points and a team-high three assists, while junior
Francisco Amiel chipped in a season-best 12 points.
The Mids got out to an early 7-3 lead before back-to-back three-pointers from Amiel sparked a 13-5 Raider run that put Colgate in front 16-12 at the 13:26 mark of the opening half. After Navy knotted the score at 16 two minutes later, a pair of three-pointers from Swopshire and senior
Jordan Robertson capped off a 10-3 Colgate spurt that had the Raiders in front by seven at 26-19 with 7:16 left on the clock.
Colgate held onto a six-point advantage following a Rayman three-point play with 3:37 to play, but Navy closed the half on a 6-1 run to trim the Colgate lead to 34-33 heading into the locker room.
The Mids opened the second half on a 9-3 run to jump in front 42-37 as Colgate started the term just 1-for-10 from the field. A pair of Robertson free throws had Colgate within three, but Navy answered with five-straight points to extend its lead to 47-39 and force a Colgate timeout at the 10:56 mark.
Navy was ahead 49-41 before Colgate responded with a 14-5 run over the next five minutes to surge back in front, 55-54. The Raiders went 6-for-6 from the free throw line during the stretch and Swopshire and Amiel drained clutch back-to-back three-pointers to erase the Navy lead.
The Raiders stretched their advantage to as much as six at 64-58 as the clock wound down to 3:04. Colgate remained ahead by five at 66-61, but Navy cut the lead to two with a Hasan Abdullah three-pointer to make it 66-64 with 57 seconds on the clock.

Head Coach
Matt Langel
- "Navy is always a very hard-fought game. You know it's going to be a game you have to grind out, not a high-offense and flowing type game. I was proud of our guys for sticking true to who we are and kicking, scratching and clawing our way back into the game in the second half."
- "We talked about this being a tough stretch for us. We let one go at Lafayette the other night, then have to turn around and face Navy, Boston University and Bucknell. The guys know that it's a tough stretch, but the conference has proven that anybody can beat anybody on any given night."
UP NEXT
