HAMILTON –
Colgate added more résumé material to its early season bonafides by doing something that hadn't been done around these parts in quite a while.

The Raiders beat Cornell.

Griffin Brown scored a career-high six goals and Colgate defeated the Big Red at home for the first time in 54 years with a 14-11 decision here Saturday.

Not since 1997 had the Raiders tasted victory of any kind against their Central New York rivals, and not since 1964 had Colgate claimed a home victory over Cornell. But the Raider offense kept the throttle down for all 60 minutes and scored no fewer than three goals in any quarter.

The game was tied 4-4, 7-7 and 10-10 at the quarter breaks. But that's when Colgate's domination at the faceoff-X finally paid dividends and Brown caught fire.

From 0:19 of the third quarter until the 9:36 mark of the fourth, Brown scored four consecutive times to turn a 10-9 deficit into a 13-10 lead. The first goal was unassisted and then Nicky Petkevich turned into Brown's personal valet with – Bam! Bam! Bam! – three pinpoint assists.

32784Collin Orr won 22 of 29 faceoff attempts, including five of six in the critical fourth quarter to help Colgate maintain possession as the minutes evaporated.

The Raiders peppered Cornell goalkeeper Christian Knight with 10 shots in the fourth quarter to only three on the other end for the Big Red. Shots in the second half were 21-10 Raiders.

Colgate's defense and riding game also were impressive, limiting Cornell to just 4-of-9 on clears in the second half and forcing six of their nine turnovers in the final 30 minutes.

In addition to Brown's six goals and one assist, Joe Delaney contributed a hat trick and one assist while Petkevich scored twice to go with four assists.

Cornell had won 12 straight in the series overall and was 23-1 against the Raiders since last losing in Hamilton, 12-4 back in 1964. Colgate's only win in that stretch was 9-6 in Ithaca in 1997.

From the Sources
• Colgate head coach Mike Murphy: (On the game) "I'm just proud of our guys. We knew it would be a 60-minute game and we battled the whole way. I challenged Griffin Brown after the Binghamton game, and he showed me what kind of a player he is with the performance today. I'm proud of him and proud of the offensive guys from top to bottom."

32792(On the fourth quarter) "It helped that Collin Orr really controlled the faceoff-X. We were able to have the ball a lot and we kind of slanted the field in our direction. When we got opportunities to score, we hit some good shots against a real quality team."

• Colgate midfielder Griffin Brown: (On his performance) "We just got a bunch of good looks. Nicky found me on a couple of easy step-downs. He and I played really well together but we all had a bunch of great looks. The offense played really well.

"Cyrus coming to the cage was really good for us. He played great. It was just a great team win."

(On the second-half surge) "Abba (Anthony Abbadessa) came into the locker room at halftime and got us going. He's the leader of our team and we fed off his energy."

• Colgate faceoff specialist Collin Orr: (On his game) "I was fortunate to have the wings helping me all day and a lot of that success is on them. I just put the ball in the best spot I can for them and they took care of it. It was a great unit victory.

"We had great poise. We showed we are a mature team and that we can play with anybody. It was a slugfest but we kept swinging back. It was awesome."
