HAMILTON – It's not quite record-breaking, but it's not bad.
Colgate's high-octane offense continued its early season surge, putting 10 goals on the board in the first quarter en route to a 21-7 coasting past Binghamton.
The 21 goals were the most since head coach
Mike Murphy's debut season of 2012, when the Raiders won 24-14 at Robert Morris. The 39 goals scored in the first two games are the most since 1990, when Colgate opened with a 27-8 triumph at Air Force and a 21-2 victory over Holy Cross.
The Raider starting attack scored nine goals and added four assists. First-year
Mike Hawkins put five goals on the board, while
Anthony Abbadessa added three goals and a pair of assists.
Chase Wittich scored a goal and assisted on two others.
Duncan Hoskinson posted his second collegiate hat trick and
Jackson Lanning tallied the first three goals of his career.
Sam Cleveland added two goals and two assists, giving him six assists in two games.

Colgate led 6-0 just past the halfway mark of the first quarter. The goals came in order from Hawkins, Wittich, Hoskinson, Abbadessa, Hoskinson and
Griffin Brown.
After Binghamton got on the board, the Raiders answered with four more and led 10-1.
Lewis Langford scored his first collegiate goal to get that run going, followed by
Will Blumenberg, Abbadessa and Hawkins.
Cleveland, Hawkins and Cleveland scored to make it 13-2 with 6:41 remaining before half. Hawkins scored one more before intermission and the Raiders went to the locker room in front 14-5.
Binghamton put a pair on the board in the first 5½ minutes of the second half, pulling within 15-7, before the Colgate defense clamped down and reserve goalkeeper
Cyrus Scott found his stride. Scott made seven saves in the second half and held the Bearcats scoreless over the final 24:39 to earn his first career win.
Colgate, meanwhile, tallied the game's final six goals. Senior
Jackson Lanning provided the highlight with the first three goals of his career.

From the Source

•
Colgate head coach Mike Murphy: (On the game) "We were sharp at the start I was pleased with the way we played in the first quarter. After that, we just lost our discipline. I know that can happen when the game is going like that but we did not play well defensively. There were mental lapses and we've got to be a lot better.
"I'm happy for the guys. It's better to be 2-0 than 1-1."
(On
Cyrus Scott) "The first two that Cyrus saw were kind of right on top of him, but then he got in a good groove. That was good. We've got to be better in the net as a whole, but Cyrus gave us a good jump there."
(On the first two games) "We're playing offense at a really good pace. We're sharing the ball very well but we just have to be more disciplined. We want to be a team that is smart and takes the good shots. We will have a huge challenge Saturday against the Big Red."
•
Colgate attack Anthony Abbadessa: (On the early offense) "The offense is flowing right now. We've got
Mike Hawkins putting up big numbers as a freshman. Anytime you get a young guy contributing like that, you know you're going to be successful.
Chase Wittich is as reliable as they come down there with the ball.
"Things are moving great right now and everybody's contributing. That's the big thing right now. We just need to keep it rolling."

•
Colgate midfielder Jackson Lanning: (On his game) "It good to have a lot of depth on the team. That really worked out for us today and we were clicking on all fronts. You could tell during the offseason how deep our roster was and these first two games have shown it. We've just got to keep pushing and contributing from the bottom up."
