Krull Makes 17 Saves as Raiders Fall to Bald Eagles, 1-0, in 2OT

Colgate and Lock Haven Deadlocked Until Game-Winner Goal with 2:11 Left in Second OT

HAMILTON – Colgate field hockey goalkeeper Maria Krull (Leicester, Massachusetts) made 17 saves for the Raiders and kept the Raiders fighting until the very end but the Lock Haven Bald Eagles came away with the 1-0 win, scoring the game-winning goal with just 2:11 left in the second overtime Friday night at Tyler's Field.

Both teams battled back and forth throughout regulation and into the overtime sessions before Lock Haven broke the scoreless tie after being granted a penalty corner with less than three minutes left in the second overtime. Tia Judy inserted the ball from the left side to Tamia Roach at the top of the circle. Roach fired the ball and it just snuck past Krull for the game-winning goal with 2:11 to play in double overtime.

Neither team had much offense going in the first half as the Bald Eagles outshot the Raiders, 3-1. Krull had one of her finer saves on the evening with a kick save with 15 minutes left in the half to keep it scoreless.

Lock Haven began to rack up the shots in the second half but Krull stood up the task. With just under 20 minutes left in the second half, she made two difficult saves off a penalty corner.

Just seven minutes after those two saves, Krull made her best save of the night as a centering feed snuck through the circle to MacKenzie Farley all alone on the back door. Krull scurried across her line and cut off the angle to make the unbelievable sprawling save.

Krull made another three consecutive saves as the clock ticked to under a minute left in the second half to keep the game scoreless as the Raiders and Bald Eagles headed into overtime.

After being outshot 20-2 overall and 12-2 on goal in regulation, the Raiders took over in the extra sessions with eight total shots and four on goal. Sophomore Iona MacKillop (Glasgow, Scotland) nearly ended the game six minutes into the first overtime but her shot glanced off the post.

Colgate and Lock Haven traded shots throughout the first and second overtime frames before Roach scored the Bald Eagles' game-winner.

Head Coach April Cornell
Thoughts on Friday night's game
"Today's game was really about resiliency, we made the changes so if there happened to be a mistake in the game we were really confident in being able to make the adjustments."

"We're gelling and combining so well right now, it's really nice to see so I think going into that overtime it was about resiliency and we knew we were right there. One ball just had to go our way and trickle in because we were putting on the pressure in both overtimes."

Cornell on Maria Krull
"I can't say enough for Maria and how important she is, she's a competitor and is somebody that is going to keep us in every single game. For us, knowing that we really have that steadiness back there and the defense has a goalkeeper that they really trust is huge. She's just a phenomenal player back there and had some amazing saves."

Preparing for Saint Francis
"We will look at ways we can execute better in our attack because that's what it's coming down to right now. We are young and young on the attacking line; I understand that. We have several freshmen and a sophomore playing up there, so with experience comes execution. That's something we're building on."

UP NEXT
The Raiders will have a day off before returning to the field on Sunday to take on the Saint Francis Red Flash with game-time set for 12 p.m. at Tyler's Field.
