Bruijn, Minturn Score in Loss to Saint Francis

Colgate Field Hockey Closes Out Tough Stretch of Five Games in 10 Days with the Loss

HAMILTON – A pair of Colgate field hockey first-years tallied three-point games for the Raiders Sunday afternoon as the Raiders fell to the Saint Francis Red flash, 6-2, at Tyler's Field.

Anne Marijn Bruijn (Naarden, Netherlands) and Meghan Minturn (Winnetka, Illinois) each picked up three points with a goal and an assist for both Colgate goals in the loss.

Colgate held a pair of one-goal leads throughout the game but Saint Francis responded with quick goals of their own before eventually the Red Flash scored the final five goals of the game.

Bruijn gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the game as Minturn deflected a pass from Michaela Corvi (Newburyport, Massachusetts) to Bruijn wide open on the back door for the goal.

Kyra Castano picked up the first Red Flash goal of the game as part of a four-point game to tie the game, 1-1, with 25:20 left in the first half. The Raiders turned the ball over on their own end line and Abby Romig fired a centering feed to Castano who poked the ball past a charging Maria Krull (Leicester, Massachusetts).

Early in the second half, Minturn got a goal of her own after Bruijn deflected a pass over Saint Francis goalkeeper Elizabeth Dyer's leg and Minturn controlled the ball before reversing it home.

The lead didn't last long as Saint Francis' Brea Seabrook scored her first of three consecutive goals off penalty corners to tie the game before eventually taking it for good. Seabrook's hat trick was the first the Raiders had allowed all season.

Brianna Govia and Taylor Nesmith finished off the scoring in the final five minutes of the game to close out the scoring.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach April Cornell
"We knew Saint Francis' potential and we needed to play a full 70-minute game against them. There were times where instead of being mentally tough, we kind of let the game get controlled by Saint Francis instead of taking back control of our game…especially after scoring a goal then allowing them to come back and get a defensive corner that quickly on us."

"It was a really intense schedule the last week but it was good for us because there is a lot that we saw in our development and our game. Today was a tough game for us; I think mentally the fatigue set in more than anything. We are a fit team and we're able to play with anybody at anytime, we showed that in the double overtime game with Lock Haven but it's the mental fatigue that wears down once you start to get tired in the second half."
