Hall of Honor Q&A – Kate (Barrett) Lukabu ’04

Former Patriot League Player of the Year Still Owns Colgate Season Goal, Point Records

HAMILTON – Induction for the Colgate Athletics Hall of Honor takes place Sept. 9 during Homecoming Weekend.

In advance of those ceremonies, Colgate Athletics compiled a brief question-and-answer session with each of the honorees. Today's honoree is Kate (Barrett) Lukabu '04 from women's soccer.

Lukabu was the 2003 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year after reaching the NCAA season top 10 in points per game. She finished her senior campaign with 18 goals and 45 points – both Colgate season records to this date – and added nine assists to lead the team in that category as well.

Lukabu30635 was a three-time All-Patriot League First Team selection and was a multiple All-Northeast Region choice in 2003 after having earned Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors in 2000. She remains in the Colgate career top 10 in all three rankings and was a member of the Raiders' 2000 Patriot League championship team.

In 2015, Lukabu was named to the Patriot League's Silver Anniversary Team.

Here is the Q&A with Kate (Barrett) Lukabu:

What is your current occupation?
"I am an Account Director for a company close to Colgate called Terakeet, located in Armory Square in Syracuse. I started working for Terakeet when my husband, Tembwe Lukabu '04, took a coaching position with the Colgate football team in 2014. I've been blessed to find a place to work that blends well my family dynamic with my husband's career, which often has us moving around the country. Terakeet was recently named one of the top companies to work for in New York; this is because the company is heavily focused on employee happiness, satisfaction and culture.

"Terakeet is a global leader in influencer marketing technology and solutions. My supervisor, Andres Echenique, SVP of Brand Experience, also a Colgate alum from the class of 1983. He has been instrumental to my success at Terakeet as an appreciated mentor with an entrepreneurial mind. Andres is also a Thoughts into Action mentor, a program for current Colgate students looking to turn an idea/concept into reality."

Why did you choose to attend Colgate?
"Colgate was the perfect mix of competitive athletics and academics, a duo that isn't easy to find. I also loved the idea that my parents and family would be close enough where they could attend every single home game, and they ultimately made it to about 95 percent of my collegiate games."

Which person proved to be most instrumental to your success as a Colgate student-athlete?
"I would have to say my twin brother, Kyle, who was also a student-athlete at Colgate on the track and field and cross country teams. Kyle was an incredibly hard worker – some would say perfectionist – and he pushed me to be better both in the classroom and on the soccer field."

What was your favorite Colgate moment?
"There are so many that come to mind, many of which I would never repeat, but without a doubt the moment that stands out is when I met my husband my junior year. We met at our building orientation in the fall of 2002. We instantly became the best of friends.

"Tembwe is a person who you don't forget once you've met him and you immediately want to know more about him (it turned out that he was a pretty impressive football player too). As much as he was an amazing athlete, he is by far the best person I've ever met in my 35 years."

What would you characterize as your biggest accomplishment since graduating from Colgate?
"I would have to say hands down my family. My husband and I have been blessed with three healthy, beautiful children: Zaida (5), Kamryn (4) and Paxton (3). Each child was born in a different state but all three experienced a Colgate winter in 2014. We have them involved in all sorts of sports and activities and are not quite sure which of them will ultimately stick with it. But it is very evident that they all carry a competitive spirit that will be fun to watch for years to come!"
