Lehigh Runs Past Raiders

2nd-Quarter Outburst, Faceoff Edge Propel 11-5 Decision; Brown Scores Two for 3rd Straight

HAMILTON – A five-goal Lehigh burst to end the first half backed up by a 16-4 edge in faceoffs proved to be the difference in an 11-5 Mountain Hawks victory over Colgate here Sunday.

Trailing 2-0, the Raiders got on the board 33 seconds into the second quarter as Peter Donato took a pass from Sam Cleveland and fired it past the Lehigh keeper. Griffin Brown followed three minutes later with an unassisted tally to knot the game at 2-2.

The Mountain Hawks answered with their 5-0 run to close the half. Colgate scored the opening goal of the third quarter but could draw no closer than four goals the rest of the way.

Conor Gaffney was the star for Lehigh, winning 16-of-20 faceoffs including a perfect 9-0 mark in the second half. Gaffney scooped up 12 ground balls to help the Mountain Hawks win that category, 30-19.

Chase Wittich, Brown and Anthony Abbadessa scored Colgate's second-half goals.

Wittich27512 buried his sixth goal of the season just over two minutes into the third quarter to pull the Raiders within 7-3. The Colgate defense kept Lehigh off the board for nearly the entire term until Lucas Spence put the Mountain Hawk advantage back to five at 8-3 with 2:44 left in the stanza.

From the Source
• Colgate head coach Mike Murphy: (On the game) "The field was definitely tilted their way. (Lehigh's Conor) Gaffney did a great job facing off – if you go 16-for-20, you're going to control it fairly well. In the second half, we turned them over a little bit, which was good because it gave us some opportunities to have possession. But, again, too many turnovers, and that's where the game is won and lost."
