HAMILTON – Colgate used a nine-goal run to break open a 4-4 tie while holding Hobart scoreless for more than 38 minutes en route to an impressive 13-6 win Wednesday evening at Crown Field.
Four different Raiders recorded multigoal games, with
Matt Donovan and
Griffin Brown tallying hat tricks to lead the Colgate offense.
Brown helped the Raiders strike first with his seventh goal of the season just over a minute into the game before Donovan made it 2-0 Colgate 2½ minutes later.
The Statesmen answered with back-to-back goals from Mason Burr and Tanner John to knot the score at 2-2 with just under seven minutes left in the quarter.
Abbadessa spun his way around the Statesmen defense to net his team-leading 10th goal of the season at the 3:53 mark to put the Raiders back in front.
Duncan Hoskinson added another Colgate tally with 11 seconds left on the first-quarter clock to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead heading into the second term.
Hobart tied the game once again at 4-4 just over two minutes into the second stanza, but
Sam Cleveland quickly answered with an unassisted goal at the 11:56 mark to give Colgate back the lead.
Nicky Petkevich and Cleveland struck again before the halftime horn rang and the Colgate defense stood strong to hand the Raiders a 7-4 advantage heading into the locker room.

It was all Colgate in the third quarter as the Raiders outscored the Statesman 4-0. Donovan accounted for two of the tallies, while Petkevich and
Peter Donato chipped in one apiece as the Raiders took an 11-4 lead.
Brown netted two goals to open the fourth quarter and stretched Colgate's run to 8-0. Hobart's 38:06 scoreless streak was finally snapped at the 4:04 mark of the final term as the Statesmen scored two in the final four minutes. But it wasn't enough as Colgate cruised to the 13-6 victory.

Colgate head coach Mike Murphy: (On the game) "It was a good bounce-back win for us after a tough one Sunday. I was really proud of our seniors. We were a little bumped up, but
Tyler Schmarak got the first start of his career and he did a really good job against a very talented attack.
Jackson Patterson was great on Frank Brown and held Frank scoreless. I don't think that happens a lot.
(On the younger scorers) "I'm glad to see those guys do well. For Matt to get three goals, and Griffin's been doing it for us from the jump. He's a talented freshman and a guy who we have a lot of confidence in. Our young guys are talented, and they need to continue to play that way.

Colgate first-year midfielder Griffin Brown: (On his game) "Coach talked yesterday about it being a players week. We just wanted to go out there and play. The offense played with a lot more pace and we really attacked the goal today. Everyone was putting them away and we had a really good shooting day.
(On blending in) "We have a lot of young guys playing but the seniors do a great job helping us.
Peter Donato is on a line with two freshman players and he's done a great job with us. He's really helped us out, so the credit really goes to the seniors."
