Eldridge Nets Two Short-Handed in 4-1 Win

Raiders defeat Union; Eldridge Becomes First Player in Program History to Tally Two Short-Handed Goals in One Game

Hamilton -- The Colgate women's ice hockey team finished their sweep of the weekend with a 4-1 victory over Union College. Leading the way for the Raiders was Jessie Eldridge, who notched two short-handed goals. She is the first player in program history to score twice short-handed in a single game.

Colgate got on the board first, with just under nine minutes remaining in the first period on a short-handed tally. Eldridge stole the puck in the Colgate defensive zone, skated down to the opposite end, dodged a defender and poked the puck in past Kate Spooner.

The Dutchwomen answered back and tied the game up three minutes later when Haley Shugart was able to slip one past Julia Vandyk.

The Raiders picked up the pace in the second frame, notching two unanswered goals.

Eldridge made the score 2-1 with a goal that was much like her first of the game, as it was shorthanded. She got the puck in the Colgate defensive zone and skated it all the way to the offensive zone to once again beat Spooner with a fast shot. Kaila Pinkney was credited with the assist on the play.

Shae Labbe added Colgate's third goal with just under five minutes left in the second. Olivia Zafuto took a hard shot from above the left faceoff circle and Megan Sullivan redirected it in front, directly to the waiting stick of Labbe, who fired it home.

The Raiders fourth and final goal of the game came on the power play, just over halfway through the third period. Zafuto got the play started by passing to Sullivan, who sent the puck on net. The rebound came off the pad of Spooner and Bailey Larson was right in front to send the puck into the back of the net.

Julia Vandyk recorded 15 saves in the win while Spooner made 42 saves.
