HAMILTON – The Colgate field hockey team has trusted the process all season long and it is starting to pay off after picking up a 2-1 win over Brown on Sunday at Tyler's Field.
Colgate recorded its second straight victory and fourth overall win to improve to 4-11 for its most wins since the 2014 season when the senior class were freshmen.
The freshman class this season have stepped up in a big way to help their seniors go out on a high note as
Anne Marijn Bruijn (Naarden, Netherlands) and
Michaela Corvi (Newburyport, Massachusetts) each tallied goals and senior goalkeeper
Maria Krull (Leicester, Massachusetts) made six saves for the Raiders.
Perhaps the biggest play in the game came in the first 16 minutes as
Josie Cook (New Cumberland, Pennsylvania) recorded a defensive save to maintain the scoreless tie. Krull slipped on the wet surface coming out to cut off the angle of a dribbling Corinne Condie. With a wide open goal, Condie ripped a shot but Cook jumped in front of the open cage and knocked the ball away with her stick for her first career defensive save.
Nine minutes later, Bruijn gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead after nearly 24-and-a-half minutes of scoreless play with her second of the season.
Sarah DeMarco (Bernardsville, New Jersey) fired a shot that was saved by Brown goalkeeper Katie Hammaker but the rebound dropped to her right where Bruijn was to swipe home the rebound.
The Raiders doubled their lead less than five minutes later with 5:48 left in the first half as Corvi buried what goes down as the game-winning goal.
Katie Anderson (Greene, New York) restarted the play on the right wing after a Brown foul deep in Colgate's offensive zone. Anderson played the ball under a defender's stick to Corvi who swiped the ball in one motion past her defender to Corvi in the middle of the circle. Corvi then one-timed the ball to the left side of the cage after she managed to beat her defender to the ball.
Brown managed to get one goal back with 17:23 left in the second half as Lexi King scored her first of the season. The original pass was intended for Anagha Nayak but deflected back to King for the goal.
After pulling the goalie for a kicking back, Brown had one last attack with 1:50 left in the second half off a penalty corner. Wide open on the left side after inserting a penalty corner, Gina Openshaw was denied at the doorstep as Krull side-stepped to get in front of the ball for the save.

Head Coach
April Cornell
"I saw total team connection and effort today, they showed that they trusted one another and they were gelling with one another. It was amazing to see individuals step up in so many different areas and have each others backs."
"It was an amazing play by Josie, it's great to see the focus that this team brings when they step out on the field and the confidence to know that they can make those plays. It doesn't matter if a player goes down, somebody else is going to step up and that's really the culture that I look for and am trying to create with this team. Everybody is so important, everybody has a role on this team and I expect everybody when they're on the field to step up and make those kind of plays."
"The team really feeds off of one another's energy. When we can grab the momentum like we did, we just capitalized on it. We're able to take it at speed, connect with one another and set up those plays in front of the goal so that we can capitalize. It's all about recognizing when we have those opportunities and taking over the momentum."
"I'm looking forward to this Lehigh game because for our team, it sets a statement to come in and be able to play against a Patriot League team and hopefully come out on top. We have a lot of confidence coming into this game, we're going to continue to work hard and prepare for it. We're not going to just ease up and coast into this last weekend, we're going to continue to push and have fun out on the field so that we're ready for Lehigh."
First-year
Anne Marijn Bruijn
"It was a great game for everyone, we just connected and it all worked. It's great to see that out on the field."
"For me personally, it pumped me up but if anyone had scored that goal the whole team felt that we could win this game. It wasn't just me, it was a team effort and I was just lucky to get the ball on my stick and put it in the goal."
"Everyone has a lot of confidence and we see that we can get the job done. In the beginning of the season, we had trouble finding each other and connecting leading to a couple close losses. Now we're starting right from the beginning, scoring goals, continuing to move forward and hope to get our first Patriot League win next week."
