HAMILTON – Colgate women's soccer is teaming up with the Bob Woodruff Foundation for an awareness match this weekend.
During Saturday's 4:30 p.m. contest against American, Colgate Athletics is handing out free T-shirts to the first 100 fans and hosting a 50/50 raffle, to help bring awareness to this great organization. The Raiders will also be wearing blue and green shoelaces during the game.
In January 2006, Colgate grads Bob '83 and Lee Woodruff '82 seemed to have it all. But when Bob, ABC's newly appointed news anchor, was hit by a roadside bomb while covering the war in Iraq, life changed in an instant. Bob's traumatic brain injury nearly killed him. But his miraculous recovery inspired his family to do one thing: Give injured heroes access to the high level of support and resources they deserve, for as long as they need it. That wish then became their mission.
The organization finds and funds innovative programs in communities where veterans, their families and caregivers live and work. That's how they tackle the problems that can prevent veterans from fulfilling their dreams for the next chapter of their lives.
Over a year later, the two of them co-wrote a best selling memoir "In an Instant," chronicling Bob's injuries in Iraq and how their family persevered through a time of intense trauma and uncertainty.
The Woodruff family also established the Bob Woodruff Family Foundation for Traumatic Brain Injury (BWFF) to raise money to assist members of the military with cognitive rehabilitation and care following a traumatic brain injury suffered in service to their country.
Bob was an outstanding lacrosse player for the Maroon and White between 1980-83. He served as a captain of the lacrosse team in his junior and senior seasons. A four-year letterwinner at attack, Bob set the school's career record for goals with 131 and finished second in career points with 184. He held the single-season record for points with 82 and ranked second on the single-season list for goals scored with 50.
