HAMILTON – Coaching captured the heart of former Colgate women's ice hockey defenseman Kiira Dosdall '09, but she is not ready to hang up her skates just yet.

Earlier this summer, Dosdall was signed to the inaugural roster of the New York Riveters. The Riveters are participating in the first season of the National Women's Hockey League along with three other teams.

Dosdall recently altered her off-ice career path after a two-year stint as girls hockey coach at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, joining the education technology company Schoology in New York City. In her new employment, she works with many Raider alums including Bill Kindler '08, one of the co-founders of the company, and former field hockey player Kaley Zaharris '09.

While at Colgate, Dosdall was a two-time Raiders captain. She twice was an All-ECAC selection, and received the team honor of co-most valuable defensive player in her freshman season and swept the team defensive MVP award in her final three campaigns.

Coaching Enters the Picture
All of Dosdall's time may have been spent playing on the ice, but that doesn't mean coaching was not a potential option for later in life.

"I think coaching has always been on my radar," Dosdall said. "I went to prep school for high school and I really loved my coaches. I always thought about how after college I would someday want to do what they do."

In her first season as an assistant coach for Brewster Academy, Dosdall faced almost every obstacle that a coach could face. The team had a total of eight players and usually was not on the winning end of games. After her season as assistant coach, she was ready to step forward and put all she could into the head coaching job.

"The head coach stepped down and then I knew I was going to get the job, so I did a lot of recruiting," Dosdall said. "We had a full team last year, which was a good step up."

The Fairfield, Connecticut, native enjoyed her season as head coach of the Brewster Academy Bobcats varsity girls ice hockey team.

"You could see how our success would have steadily increased," Dosdall said. "My kids were awesome. The highlight of my day was getting out on the ice with them."

In a first season for any head coach, one would expect surprises and bumps in the road, but Dosdall said she really did not receive any surprises.

"I was expecting to see all sorts of stuff but I didn't," she said. "The parents were great and the kids were awesome. Before the season, I was looking ahead and wondering what I was going to have to face, but by the end I reflected on how smooth it all was."

Time Spent in Austria
Though putting on her skates for the New York Riveters, Dosdall plans to keep her foot in the coaching door. She will be heavily involved in running the community outreach program with the NWHL and the Riveters in order to fulfill her desire for coaching.

Dosdall after graduating from Colgate competed professionally in Austria for four years with the Vienna Sabres. While with the Sabres, Dosdall helped lead the team to four straight Austrian titles and three European League titles, and became the first player named to the EWHL All-Star Team four years in a row.

While spending time with the Sabres, Dosdall also found a passion for teaching and coaching. When she was not on the ice, she spent her time teaching kindergarten at the American International School in Vienna.

"When I came home, I was looking at prep school jobs so I could continue to teach and transition to coaching," Dosdall said.

Dosdall may have graduated six years ago, but she is still involved with Colgate's Women's Ice Hockey and follows both the men's and women's teams very closely.

"Last year I helped Greg Fargo organize a reunion that was probably one of the most fun Colgate events I have been a part of," Dosdall said. "I helped bring back a ton of alums when the team hosted Minnesota last year. It was an awesome weekend. I hope to make this a tradition!"

Once a Raider, Always a Raider
She still remains close with her teammates, citing that these are the bonds to last a lifetime.

"Team chemistry was the most important thing," she said. "I just loved my teammates and they are still my best friends."

Dosdall had plenty of wonderful memories from her time playing at Colgate, but her favorite memory as a Raider came just recently.

Former teammate and Dosdall's good friend, Ruthie Fish '09, had her wedding to Rodney Jehu-Appiah '10 at Colgate. Dosdall said that the wedding was absolutely stunning. What made this occasion so memorable and special was that out of the five bridesmaids, three were former Colgate teammates (Dosdall, Sam Hunt and Laura Jansen), and many other teammates where there, too.

"One of the things that made the wedding so special was that so many parents of our teammates were there – my parents, the Dodds, the Dombovys and more," Dosdall said. "I think that just speaks to how tightly knit our group was. It's just like one big family."

While back in Hamilton, Dosdall and the rest of the team were able to see familiar faces and pick up right where they left off. She was able to catch up with many different local favorites, but the two she cited were Loren, who runs the maintenance for Starr Rink; and Lou-Anne from the New York Pizzeria (Slices), who delivered pizza after the wedding reception.

"Everyone still remembers our names; it's like we never left," she said. "Being able to step away from Colgate for a few years and then come back for such a special event really emphasized what an integral part of our lives Colgate is.

"It is such a special place, and I think the pride even grows with time."
