HAMILTON — Colgate's
Brandon Burke added another opening-week accolade when he was named USILA Defensive Player of the Week.
The U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association selects a national offensive and defensive player each week, and Burke was chosen after he stopped 11 shots Saturday to help the Raiders to a 9-5 win at No. 14 Bryant.
Burke, who was the Patriot League's Rookie of the Year last season, departed Rhode Island with a .688 save percentage and a number of highlight-reel stops that boosted Colgate down the stretch. The Raiders outscored Bryant 4-1 in the final period for their first road victory against a ranked opponent since the 2012 squad took down No. 1 Massachusetts in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
Burke last season played and started in all 16 games. He was selected Patriot League Rookie of the Year after turning in an 8.81 goals-against average that was fifth in the conference and 13th nationally. The Potomac, Maryland, product added a .524 save percentage that was seventh in Patriot League.
Johns Hopkins junior Ryan Brown was the USILA Offensive Player of the Week.
The Raiders (1-0) play at Vermont (0-1) this Saturday in a 1 p.m. start.
