Big Road Win as Raiders Edge BU, 76-69

Clutch 3-Pointer, Late Foul Shots Secure Colgate's Ninth Conference Win; Raiders Still Remain in First-Place Tie

BOSTON – Senior Ethan Jacobs hit a 3-pointer with 48.7 seconds remaining that ultimately secured Colgate a 76-69 road victory over Boston University here Wednesday night.

The Raiders then converted on five of their final six free throws to put the game away.

Colgate now sits with a 9-4 Patriot League mark and remains in a first-place tie with Bucknell. The victory also marked the first time the Raiders recorded nine league wins since going 9-5 in 2003.

Following Jacobs' trey, the Terriers responded on the other end of the court to make it 71-69 in favor of the visitors.

On the next possession, Boston U. fouled Luke Roh with 25 seconds left to play after Colgate had drained some of the clock down. The senior converted on 1-of-2 shots, making it a three-point Raiders' edge.

Colgate then called a timeout to set up its defense and that strategy worked, as the Terriers missed a layup with 17 ticks remaining. Matt McMullen pulled down the huge defensive board and finished the game from the free throw line going 4-for-4 down the stretch to lock up the victory.

Damon Sherman-Newsome led Colgate with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting, 4-of-9 from long and 1-of-3 from the free throw line.

Roh matched his career-best scoring night with 15 points in the game, including 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. The senior also chipped in a team-high eight rebounds, while handing out a team-best four assists. Austin Tillotson matched Roh in helpers with four of his own.

Jacobs closed out the Raiders in double-digits with 12 points in the game and posted Colgate's only block of the night.

The Raiders finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the floor, while hitting 9-of-23 from long-range. Boston U. shot 47.8 percent overall and 7-of-21 from downtown.

Colgate returns home to Cotterell Court on Saturday when Navy comes to town for a 2 p.m. contest. That game will also mark the Raiders annual 'Blue For Q' LGBTQ Awareness Game.

How It Happened
• After some back-and-forth action during the opening 10 minutes of the game, Colgate found itself trailing by three after an Alex Ramon jumper made it 17-14.
• The Terriers countered with a 12-2 run to take a game-high 13-point lead at 29-16 with four minutes to play in the half.
• Colgate would not go away though scoring the next 11 points over a two-minute span to make it a one-possession game at 29-27. That run was sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from Ramon and rookie Sean O'Brien.
• After the Terriers had pushed their edge back to six points, Sherman-Newsome drained a trey to send the Raiders into the break down just three.
• Out of halftime, Sherman-Newsome continued his strong offensive play scoring Colgate's opening seven points to make it a 37-35 Raider edge. That score line also marked the Raiders first advantage in the game since it was 12-10 at the 11:37 mark of the first half.
• The two teams went back-and-forth over the next 10 minutes before the game saw its fifth tie score during that span when Pat Moore drained a big 3-pointer to make it 55-all with eight minutes remaining.
• Colgate pushed its advantage to four-points but five-straight points from the Terriers gave them a 65-64 lead with two minutes to play.
• A Sherman-Newsome layup and two good free throws from Roh gave the Raiders back their advantage by three.
• The Terriers then answered with two made baskets from the charity stripe before Jacobs came up with a very timely trey to ultimately secure the victory.
• Colgate finished the game going 5-for-6 from the free throw line to protect its ninth league win of the season.

Records Watch
• Sherman-Newsome and Moore are still in the hunt for reaching 1,000 career points. Sherman-Newsome is 70 points shy, while Moore sits at 101 short.
• Tillotson recorded four assists in the game, which handed him 108 on the season. The junior is now just 25 helpers shy of matching his total from a season ago, which placed him third all-time in season-assists.
• And with his four helpers, Roh's career assist total shifts to 322. He is now one assist shy of matching Alvin Reed '06 for fourth place all-time.

Straight From The Source
• Colgate head coach Matt Langel: (on his overall thoughts from the game) "It's another Patriot League game. Most of them are going down to the wire in the last four minutes of the game. What's unique though is that they're not all the same game. And tonight it was certainly different. The officials called a close game from the start. They were making a lot of called fouls and the players had to adjust. Both teams had some foul trouble and it definitely affected the game."

"Overall I'm really proud of my guys for persevering and finding a way to win. That's kind of what it's going to come down to over these last few weeks here and to do so on the road is really hard. But again we figured out a way to win."

"Again, I credit our veteran players for sticking together and making it happen."
